About The Role
This is a Fixed Term Position until September 2026
Position accountabilities
The Senior Departmental Liaison Officer is the key link between the Minister's office and the Department, ensuring critical information and advice flow smoothly in a fast-paced environment. This senior role manages and coordinates briefings, correspondence and documentation, while developing strategies for best practice and continuous improvement. You'll provide expert advice to the Office of the Secretary and senior leaders, ensuring the Department responds effectively to the Minister's operational needs. With a strong understanding of the relevant portfolios and departmental operations, you'll guide and inform the Minister's office on emerging priorities. As part of the Minister's office team, you'll uphold engagement protocols and role-model VPS values, fostering a positive, collaborative culture. This is an exciting opportunity for a skilled communicator and strategist to play a pivotal role at the heart of government, supporting decision-making and delivering outcomes that matter to the community.
- Build strong working relationships across the Minister's office, DTP Executive, the wider Department and other ministerial offices.
- Coordinate administrative and communication requirements, maintain protocols and provide decision making advice.
- Develop strategies and solutions that contribute to the effective management of information between the department and ministerial offices.
- Provide high level proactive and authoritative advice to the Office of the Secretary, senior departmental and ministerial staff.
- Liaise effectively across the DLO network, and with staff at all levels in the Group and the Department.
- Assist driving the team's workplan while consistently role modelling VPS values.

Key Selection Criteria
We're seeking a dynamic professional with a deep understanding of government structures, protocols and operations to thrive in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment. You will be able juggle multiple priorities and deadlines, working independently within clear guidelines to deliver accurate, timely outcomes.
Your sharp critical thinking and problem-solving skills will help you assess situations, make sound decisions and act or escalate appropriately. Strong interpersonal and communication abilities are essential—you'll build and maintain trusted relationships with senior stakeholders, negotiate effectively and resolve issues constructively.
You will also be capable of managing and reviewing sensitive, confidential materials with discretion and can identify opportunities to streamline processes and improve systems. If you're ready to apply your expertise to drive better ways of working and support key government objectives, this role offers the chance to make an impact where it matters most.
Qualifications And Experience
Desirable
- Understanding of the functions and operation of government, including Cabinet, Parliament, and procedures associated with legislation, together with experience in the public sector.
- Knowledge of or familiarity with the Transport Sector and/or Planning policy environment.
- Experience in the use of Microsoft Office 365 and Government eBriefings system (or similar).
The successful applicant will be required to work a minimum of three days per week in the office, in-line with the VPS flexible work policy.
