National Events Technical Manager – Volunteer Position

Swimming Australia is seeking a Volunteer – National Events Technical Manager on a 2 year appointment working in a hybrid model from home and at event venues. The ideal candidate will be aligned to our Values of Courage, Unity and Excellence and oversee the safe and compliant deliver of all national swimming competitions in line with Swimming Australia Rules and Policies. In this role you will lead and manage Technical Officials, collaborate with the Events Teamplay a key role in the preparation and delivery of our national events including our various Championship Events and our Awards Night. The ideal candidate will have experience in major sporting event delivery with a solid understanding of accreditation, travel and logistics supported by a strong attention to detail and the ability to work collaboratively across a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.

About the role:

Reporting to the Executive General Manager of Commercial, the principal duties of this role include:

Attendance and general duties


• Attend each national swimming competition for the duration of the event


• Work with the Events team to ensure that the venue is safe for competition and conducted in accordance with SA Rules, Competition Rules and Policies.


• Attend any pre-meet training the day/s prior to commencement of competition.


• Arrive at the venue at least 90 minutes prior to the first event for each session.


• Manage the assembling of the Technical Officials for the march out for each session.


• Distribute event programs and relevant equipment to session referees prior to all heats and finals sessions.


• Where required, involved in key decision-making prior to and during the event.


• Attend Technical Official Development workshops at each National competition.

National Swim Meet Technical Official roster


• Create the roster of technical officials for each national competition as per the Appointment Policy, under the guidance of the Selection Sub-Committee of the Technical Swimming Committee (TSC).

Technical Officials & Managers briefings


• Participate in the Team Managers' briefing at each national event.


• Provide guidance and support to session referees when they conduct daily briefings with the technical officials at each meet.


• Provide support and advice to technical officials during the meet.


• Deal with any issues as they arise in relation to officiating at events.


• Where required, run a Training Information Session on the day prior to competition, to answer queries and distribute new information to technical officials.

Venue equipment check


• Before the commencement of each session check that all the equipment for the Meet is ready and in place and that it meets the standard required and conforms to the rules including but not limited to the timing system, scoreboard, lap counters and starting device.


• Work with the Events Team to ensure that a pool survey has been conducted prior to day 1 of the competition commencing so the pool is certified for any records set.


• Work with Events team and venue pool attendants to ensure the Competition Pool is cleared 15 minutes before the commencement of each session of the Meet.

Entries


• Address any queries, with the Records and Results Coordinator and Chief Recorder, on entries and results.

Event timing


• Ensure that copies of the event timeline are distributed to relevant officials prior to the session.


• Work within the parameters of the event timeline and ensure the daily events run to schedule.

Protests


• In liaison with the Referees, ensure that all protests are dealt with as per the rules.


• During and following each competition, review and enhance education processes for Technical Officials on protest procedures, incorporating learnings from current and past cases to improve consistency and understanding.

Decision making


• Make final decisions on late relay entries, medical certificates and body taping.


• Make final decision on interpretation of SA Rules and Competition Rules.

About you:

The position requirements you will need to bring to the role:


• Must be a Level 3 Referee or Starter


• Thorough understanding of World Aquatics and Swimming Australia Swimming Rules and Competition Rules


• Thorough understanding of technical official procedures and protocols at national competitions in both pool and open water disciplines


• At least 5 years demonstrated officiating experience at National competition


• At least 10 years demonstrated officiating experience at State level competition


• Highly desirable to have demonstrated experience at international level competition


• Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate teams


• Confident public speaker


• Strong communication and conflict resolution skills.


• Relevant experience and knowledge in creating development resources and strong interest in identifying and creating professional development opportunities for Technical Officials
