Brisbane City Council's Strategic Planning section is delivering suburban precincts and citywide amendments to support housing, employment and communities across the city. To further this work, we have multiple exciting opportunities for GIS Data Analysts & Researchers to undertake research and turn complex data into actionable insight, better informing planning policies and urban growth for Brisbane city.

City Planning and Design develops strategic planning policy, quality urban design creative outcomes and key legislation including the Brisbane City Plan 2014. Monitoring Brisbane's growth under the Brisbane City Plan 2014 and South East Queensland Regional Plan is critical understanding how our city will grow into the future, aligned to the themes of Brisbane Vision 2031.

Key Responsibilities (All Roles)

  • conduct in-depth research, modelling, and analysis of land use and urban development trends to support innovative strategic planning and guide economic development initiatives process, test, and model development inputs to monitor urban transformation and anticipate future growth scenarios.
  • engage Internal and external stakeholders on various information and data requests
  • enhance data management, GIS mapping, and growth modelling methodologies to support evidence-based planning, informed policy development, and strategic investment decisions.

Senior GIS Research Analyst (Band 6)

As a Senior GIS Research Analyst your responsibilities will be to work as part of a team that manage Land Use and Development Activity datasets, growth modelling tool and undertake research and analysis. You will be responsible for managing, analysing and producing data reports to support policy directions for Council. This is an opportunity for an experienced GIS and data modelling professional to support the urban research and modelling program of Brisbane City Council

  • extensive experience with GIS software, including but not limited to ESRI products (ArcGIS Pro, Portal) or open-source platforms such as QGIS. Additional exposure to Safe Software's Feature Manipulation Engine (FME) and Power BI is advantageous. Programming skills in R, Python, or SQL are highly desirable
  • proficient and confident in data wrangling, processing, mapping and visualisation skills with a strong attention to detail
  • strong analytical skills in land use planning, including the ability to conduct statistical research and interpret growth trends across areas such as property development, demographics, housing, infrastructure, employment, and grow capacity
  • demonstrated ability to undertake the development and maintenance of Council's land use and development activity core data sets
  • demonstrated ability to prepare and produce high standard reports and presentation materials that are comprehensive, accurate and timely and meet customer needs
  • effective communication and interpersonal skill.

GIS Data Analyst (Band 5)

The GIS Data Analyst will support the delivery of significant urban development research projects for strategic land use and infrastructure planning, inclusive of the award winning 'Virtual Brisbane' 3D spatial model which provides visual analysis for locations and specific development proposals and the expansion of regional planning and growth modelling.

  • excellent communication skills with ability to work autonomously and also in a team
  • understanding of urban planning, land use and development activity datasets
  • ability to use database / GIS software and ability to learn land use models
  • ability to comprehend and analyse demographic and urban infrastructure issues
  • proficient and confident in cartographic and visualisation skills that pertain to map production, data analysis and manipulation using GIS tools or PowerBI
  • exposure to database and programming language such as SQL, R, Python would be highly desirable.
