This role is classified as Level 3 role under SBS Australia's current Enterprise Agreement (with a base salary range of $55 - $59 per hour (inclusive of casual loading)). The successful applicant will be offered remuneration that is commensurate with their skills and experience and in alignment with this framework.
The role operates Monday to Friday.
At times, this role may be rostered during evening, morning or weekends, depending on news requirements. Additional shift penalty payments may apply for work performed outside of ordinary hours, including weekends and public holidays, as per the SBS Enterprise Agreement (EA). SBS may also require you to work reasonable overtime, where overtime will be paid at applicable rates in accordance with the EA.

The Role
SBS News is seeking an experienced Digital Sub-Editor to join our newsroom and help deliver high-quality, distinctive journalism that reflects the diversity of Australia.
Working closely with the News Editor and Deputy News Editor, you'll sub-edit a wide range of news, current affairs and social content for digital platforms, ensuring every story we publish is accurate, balanced, engaging and unmistakably SBS. The key focus of this role is to sub-edit article copy, and also includes subbing of social content and video scripts at times.
You'll play a key role in shaping how our audiences experience SBS News content: crafting crisp, clear and inclusive copy, elevating storytelling, and optimising content for web, app and third-party platforms. You'll understand what resonates with audiences and where, and be a positive collaborator, working with journalists across our teams.
Day to day, this role will involve:
Sub-editing articles for SBS News and Current Affairs, as well as social and other online news content
Elevating storytelling in articles, to improve accessibility and audience engagement
Ensuring content complies with style guides, SBS Charter and Code of Practice
Optimising content, including improving headlines, and ensuring best practice with multi-media assets
Working with journalists across digital, TV, audio and adjoining SBS teams
About You
You're a meticulous and motivated sub-editor who's passionate about news, current affairs and the power of great storytelling. You thrive in a digital newsroom and take pride in producing clean, accurate and engaging copy that cuts through the noise.
You'll also bring to the role:
Proven skills in sub-editing and publishing for news content on online platforms
A strong understanding and knowledge of national and international affairs
Exceptional grammar, spelling and syntax, with a flair for improving readability and ensuring stories are accessible and inclusive.
Understanding of media law, editorial judgement and a commitment to accuracy, balance and the SBS Charter.
A deep understanding of SEO best practice, optimising headlines and content for discoverability
Confidence in using content management systems and analytics tools to refine and improve performance.
A collaborative spirit: you value open communication, constructive feedback and contributing to a supportive team environment.
Most of all, you care about journalism that reflects and serves the breadth of Australian communities, helping SBS continue to inform, inspire and connect people through trusted, distinctive storytelling.
