About Us

SBS is one of the world's most unique and innovative media organisations, producing trusted, meaningful, and engaging content that exists for all Australians to inspire, support and celebrate the diversity of our multicultural society.

Our purpose, for the last 50 years, has reflected and explored the evolving diversity of Australia, investing in initiatives to deepen its connections with communities, sharing their stories and giving a voice to those often unheard, with the aim of increasing understanding and respect of the differences that make up Australia.

SBS is a truly distinctive network, showcasing multicultural, multilingual and First Nations stories otherwise untold in the Australian media.

The Role

We are looking for a dynamic and experienced editor and writer with sharp news judgment to join our digital newsroom as Deputy Features Editor/Journalist.

Working closely with the Features Editor, you will help shape SBS News' digital output, commissioning and editing in-depth and news-adjacent features from across the newsroom; writing and producing original stories on occasion, too.

We're looking for candidates who are passionate and curious storytellers, well-versed in domestic and international news and have a strong track record of producing original, high-impact digital stories.

This opportunity is ideal for an early-career editor with strong reporting experience who's eager to develop leadership and news planning capabilities within a supportive, innovative, and highly talented team.

The successful candidate will be someone who shares our vision for bold and distinctive stories that elevate the diversity of Australia's multicultural society and uphold SBS News' reputation as one of Australia's most trusted news publishers.

Day to day, this role will involve:

  • Commission, edit, write and produce impactful feature content across digital platforms, ensuring accuracy and balance in keeping with SBS' editorial standards
  • Coordinate long-term and weekly news planning, identifying opportunities for collaborations across teams in consultation with Features Editor and News Editor
  • Conduct thorough news gathering with a keen awareness of trends, national and international news and assist with workflows between teams
  • Assist with workflows between teams and liaise with rostering to ensure adequate resourcing for stories
  • Provide timely, regular feedback to reporters, with an emphasis on original reporting, rigorous sourcing, and delivering on audience needs
  • Commission visually rich graphics to complement stories, and develop ideas for innovative coverage
  • Use data and analytics tools to help inform editorial choices

About you

Ideally, you will have:

  • Exceptional writing and editing skills, with an ability to balance creative flair and style with clarity and economy
  • Demonstrated ability to pitch original and fresh ideas, and experience in helping reporters to identify and finesse angles
  • Strong editorial skills, experience in feature writing and overseeing forward-planned coverage, preferably for digital audiences
  • A knack for forward-planning and identifying underreported angles, excellent organisational skills and an ability to manage competing priorities
  • Sound understanding of media law, meticulous subbing, and strong headline writing skills
  • Confidence working autonomously — with strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Enthusiasm to collaborate across the newsroom to create unique and distinctive content that meets deadlines and cuts through daily news
