Position Overview

The Head of IT is responsible for leading, managing, and actively participating in the delivery of all IT services across Ocean Software. As a small, high-performing internal service provider, the IT team ensures the secure, efficient, and continuous operation of all corporate systems, software tools, infrastructure, and networks that underpin the company's operations globally.

This position combines both strategic and hands-on responsibilities. The role leads the IT function, manages the company's IT and software tools budget, ensures compliance with ISO27001 and other regulatory standards, and delivers high-quality support services to all Ocean staff and systems users. The Head of IT will proactively plan, forecast, and execute IT initiatives to ensure that technology supports the business' evolving operational and strategic needs.

Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities

IT Operations and Support

  • Oversee all IT infrastructure, systems, and services ensuring reliability, security, and efficiency.
  • Manage and maintain Ocean's Microsoft 365, SharePoint, Azure Cloud, domains, and network environments.
  • Provide hands-on support and lead the IT ticketing process, ensuring timely issue resolution.
  • Administer company software tools and licences ensuring renewals, updates, and compliance.
  • Lead IT onboarding/offboarding and ensure staff have the tools and access they need to perform effectively.
  • Maintain accurate inventories of hardware, software, and licences.
  • Oversee and proactively manage the company's hardware lifecycle, including planning and executing regular hardware refresh programs to ensure all employees have suitable, reliable equipment that enables them to perform their roles effectively.
  • Proactively identify and address recurring technical issues, implementing improvements to prevent reoccurrence.

IT Security, Compliance, and Policy

  • Maintain Ocean's Information Security Management System in line with ISO 27001, Essential Eight, and Cyber Essentials.
  • Ensure data protection, access control, and incident response procedures are effective.
  • Conduct and oversee regular audits, vulnerability assessments, and remediation activities.
  • Maintain Ocean's IT compliance and eligibility as a Defence supplier across relevant jurisdictions.

Budget, Planning, and Procurement

  • Develop, manage, and report on the annual IT and software tools budget.
  • Oversee all company software and system subscriptions, renewals, and procurement, ensuring alignment to business needs and cost efficiency.
  • Ensure the business has appropriate licensing and value-for-money arrangements with all IT and software vendors.
  • Plan and forecast hardware, software, and system requirements to support business growth and ensure staff have the tools they need to be effective.
  • Develop and maintain an IT Strategy and annual IT Roadmap that supports Ocean's corporate objectives and growth plans.
  • Anticipate and manage IT risks, ensuring business continuity and disaster recovery plans are current and tested.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of emerging technologies, tools, and security practices relevant to Ocean's operational context.

Leadership and Team Development

  • Lead and develop a small IT team, promoting proactive service, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Set clear priorities and ensure performance standards are met.
  • Provide expert advice to the ELT & SLT on technology, risk, and security matters.
  • Conduct regular performance reviews and establish clear objectives and metrics for success.
  • Promote collaboration, innovation, and responsiveness within the team, setting a high standard for service delivery.
  • Act as a trusted advisor to the ELT and department heads on all IT and systems-related matters.

Skills & Experience

  • Minimum 8+ years' experience in IT operations or systems administration, with at least 2 years in a leadership or management capacity.
  • Strong hands-on experience with:
  • Microsoft 365, Azure Cloud, Intune, and SharePoint administration
  • Networking (firewalls, VPNs, routers, switches, connectivity troubleshooting)
  • End-user support and device management (Windows, macOS)
  • Identity and access management (Active Directory, MFA, SSO)
  • Proven track record in IT planning, budgeting, and vendor management.
  • Experience managing software tools and subscriptions across business functions (e.g. CRM, , security platforms).
  • Strong understanding of cybersecurity frameworks, risk management, and IT compliance, ideally within an ISO 27001 certified environment.
