City of Mitcham - Help Shape Our Urban Forest for Future Generations
Are you passionate about trees, heritage, and the environment? Do you want to play a hands-on role in caring for one of Adelaide's most admired urban canopies? The City of Mitcham is looking for a dedicated Street Tree Maintenance Team Member to help preserve and enhance our beautiful, historic, and environmentally vital tree-lined streets.
Why Mitcham's Trees Matter
- A Living Legacy: The City of Mitcham's landscape is home to historic indigenous eucalyptus trees of cultural and environmental significance, along with iconic plantings such as the Moreton Bay Figs in Mitcham Village and the Kauri Pines of the former Torrens Park Estate. Many of these remarkable trees are listed on the National Trust of South Australia's Register of Significant Trees and continue to be cherished by generations of residents and visitors alike.
- Environmental Champions: Our trees reduce energy costs, lower greenhouse gas emissions, intercept rainfall to reduce flooding and pollution, and help reduce excess heat in urban areas. They are essential for a healthier, cooler, and more resilient city.
- Community & Wellbeing: Trees provide shade, privacy, and beauty, creating a sense of place and belonging. Their presence in parks and streetscapes supports biodiversity and enhances the quality of life
The Role
As a Street Tree Maintenance Team Member, you will:
- Prune, plant, & care for street trees and shrubs, ensuring safety and amenity for all.
- Operate specialist equipment (e.g., elevated work platforms, chippers, hydra ladders, chain saws) safely and efficiently.
- Respond to community enquiries & work collaboratively with your team and leaders.
- Contribute to continuous improvement and innovation in tree management practices.
- Support the implementation of the Council's street tree maintenance and development program.
- Seasonal tasks to mitigate bushfire risk including brush cutting firebreaks and clearing bushfire tracks
What We're Looking For
Essential:
- Certificate III in Horticulture/Arboriculture (or equivalent)
- High Risk Licence (EWP), MR licence, Work Zone Traffic Management certification
- Experience in horticulture & arboriculture, including pruning and removing large trees
- Strong teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills
- Commitment to safety, well-being, and continuous professional development
Desirable:
- White Card, Certificate II in Electrotechnology
- Experience with roping techniques and formative pruning
- Knowledge of tree biology and pest identification
The Benefits
- A positive safety culture environment where identification of workplace hazards is encouraged and rewarded.
- Work outdoors in some of Adelaide's most beautiful and historic streetscapes
- Join a supportive, values-driven team
- Employee Assistance programs are available to all employees and their families.
- Opportunities for ongoing training and development
- Contribute to a legacy of green spaces for the community
