About GCE
GCE Contractors are a leading Brisbane-based civil construction company specialising in pipeline construction, culvert construction, shaft construction, pipe jacking & tunnelling, bulk earthworks, roadworks, demolition and general plant hire. We have a strong track record delivering challenging projects across Queensland—safely, on time and to a high standard of quality.
We are a results-driven company operating in a fast-paced environment, where flexibility and adaptability are essential. Our people are expected to take full ownership of their work packages, while also being prepared to pivot—whether that means handing over a package midstream, taking on new projects before others are finalized, or balancing multiple priorities at once.
Role Purpose
Plan, coordinate and control day-to-day engineering on allocated work packages so projects are delivered safely, to spec, on program and within budget. Provide technical leadership on pipelines and trenchless works (pipe jacking/tunnelling), structures/culverts and associated civil works.
This role requires a hands-on engineer who thrives under pressure, embraces change, and can adapt quickly when project priorities shift.
Key Responsibilities
Planning & Delivery
- Developing look-ahead programs, method statements and staging plans; coordinating permits, service locates and hold points.
- Preparing and reviewing SWMS, task briefings and temporary works proposals (shoring, dewatering, lifting, traffic).
- Coordinating survey, set-out, as-built records and red-line drawings; maintaining ITPs, check sheets and MDRs.
- Managing subcontractors and suppliers: scopes, pre-starts, progress tracking, QA records and close-out.
- Running daily/weekly coordination with Supervisors/Foremen to hit production targets.
- Taking ownership of allocated work packages from start-up through completion or handover, with flexibility to reprioritize as business needs evolve.
Technical (GCE Scope)
- Stormwater, sewer, watermain, micro tunnelling/pipe jacking, shafts, culverts/structures, excavations, backfill/compaction, pavements and reinstatement.
- Managing groundwater/dewatering, confined space entry interfaces, live services, traffic and community constraints.
Commercial & Cost Control
- Measuring quantities and tracking cost/production; updating cost-to-complete and earned value.
- Preparing RFIs, design clarifications and non-conformance close-outs.
- Drafting and supporting variations/claims, EOM reporting, progress certificates and procurement schedules.
Quality, Safety & Environment
- Ensuring compliance with ISO 9001 / ISO 45001 / ISO 14001 systems and client specs.
- Driving zero-harm behaviors: pre-starts, risk assessments, incident reporting, corrective actions.
- Managing environmental controls (erosion/sediment, water quality, noise/dust) and community obligations.
Stakeholders & Communication
- Liaising with clients, superintendents, utility owners and inspectors; attending progress meetings.
- Clear, timely reporting to the Project Manager on program, cost, risks and opportunities.
- Maintaining flexibility and professionalism when reprioritizing or handing over projects to colleagues.
Required Experience
- 3+ years' post-graduate experience as a Project Engineer / Site Engineer on similar civil works (ideally pipelines, culverts, trenchless/pipe jacking or complex earthworks/roadworks).
- Proven delivery of work packages from start-up, commissioning/as-built under live site conditions.
- Hands-on knowledge of QA/ITPs, temporary works, dewatering, traffic control interfaces and service clashes.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast-moving, results-driven environment where priorities change.
Qualifications & Tickets
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering (or related).
- White Card; current C class driver license.
Tools & Systems (Preferred)
- JobPac for project cost and commercial management.
- Assignar for workforce, compliance and project scheduling.
- Aconex/CDE for documents and RFIs.
- MS Project (or Primavera) for programs.
- AutoCAD/12d/Bluebeam for drawings/as-builts.
- Microsoft 365 (Excel, SharePoint, Teams).
Personal Attributes
- Safety-first mindset; calm under pressure; strong planning and follow-through.
- Highly adaptable and flexible – able to switch between projects, hand over packages midstream, and pick up new responsibilities quickly.
- Clear communicator with crews and clients; collaborative and solutions focused.
- Practical problem solver who is comfortable on site and in the office.
- Results focused, with a strong sense of ownership and accountability.
What We Offer
- Challenging civil projects with trenchless, pipeline and structures exposure.
- A supportive team with genuine development pathways (including RPEQ progression).
- Competitive package + allowances as applicable; vehicle/phone/laptop per policy.
- A dynamic environment where high performers thrive and are recognized.
