What is the role?

The AFP are world leaders in forensic science and technical intelligence. Forensics is an essential enabler of frontline policing in both the physical and virtual criminal environments. The AFP Forensics area provide a foundation of innovation and collaborative problem solving, examining complex evidence, information and situations. By doing this, AFP Forensics provides solutions that keep pace with the criminal and national security environment.

Applications are sought from suitably qualified applicants wishing to be considered for the role of Team Member (Band 6) within the AFP Forensic, Facial Identification Team (FIT). As a Team Member of the FIT, you will contribute to the achievement of business, investigation and intelligence outcomes through the provision of specialist forensic (facial) examinations, analysis and specialist technical skills.

You will also be required to contribute to the achievement of outcomes in accordance with the regulatory framework, the AFP Code of Conduct and the AFP Governance Instruments. It is expected that the successful applicant will deliver on the core responsibilities and meet any requirements of the position as outlined below.

What will you do?

Providing timely and accurate support to operations, ensuring outputs align with the strategic direction of the AFP

Maintaining currency in Facial Identification through ongoing professional development and learning opportunities outside the formal education process

Perform one to many searches and one to one comparisons of uncontrolled and controlled imagery

Conduct training or presentations on Facial Image Comparison and team capabilities

Liaise and collaborate with other government and law enforcement agencies for biometric searching, projects and capability development

Maintain and ensure legislative compliance of the facial recognition system

Providing accurate, timely and impartial Forensic evidence to the courts

Contributing to research and capability development projects

Providing accurate and professional technical advice to domestic and international agency partners

Advising on the use of biometric applications, image capture conditions, formats and considerations to produce best possible operational outcomes

Contribute to team administrative tasks and the continued development of the FIT documentation and materials

Performing other duties as required

Essential Requirements

You must be an Australian Citizen at the time of application

A Negative Vetting 1 (Secret) security clearance or the ability to obtain one

Has contemporary knowledge and experience relevant to the role

Minimum of 3 years' experience in a like or related field

Relevant tertiary qualification or extensive experience and knowledge in Forensic Science or a related field

Candidates will be required to complete a Psychological and/or Medical assessment to be able to progress through this process

Desirable Requirements

The following skills and/or experience would be highly regarded:

Tertiary qualification in Forensic Identification (Biometrics)

Performed the role of a court reporting Facial Image Examiner

Additional Information

Successful applicants will be required to work flexibly on rotating shifts including days, nights, weekends and public holidays.**This role attracts a composite allowance in recognition of expanded working hours, normal patterns of attendance and shift patterns (such as night shifts, weekends and Designated Public Holidays) that are required under the Rostered Operations working pattern. In accordance with the AFP Enterprise Agreement, an employee who is required to work in accordance with the Rostered Operations working pattern will receive a Core Composite of 22% in addition to their base salary, which will count as salary for superannuation. The Commissioner has the authority to remove a composite from a role**

Recruitment Process

Applicants will need to undertake a 15 minute work exercise, a sample of 10 images may be used to check the candidates' abilities in facial comparison.

Applicants who have demonstrated their suitability for employment through their resume and application, may be asked to complete additional assessments or activities to determine suitability for the role. This may also include a formal interview. Using the relevant AFP work level standards as a guide, you may be asked a range of questions to demonstrate your skills and abilities.
