Sydney Children's Hospitals Network is the largest paediatric health care entity in Australia. We care for thousands of children each year in our hospitals and in their homes — with one purpose in mind — to help young people live their healthiest lives.

What you'll be doing

This is an exciting opportunity to support the dietitian and nursing staff in implementing nutrition care plans for infants in the Royal Hospital for Women Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

This is a job-sharing role, with the following shifts available

Monday-Friday: 8am-2:30pm

Saturday-Sunday: 9am-1pm

The successful applicants will be able to negotiate their working days. Preference will given to applicants who are able to work a minimum of 3 days a week

The NICU Allied Health Assistant (AHA) is under the governance of the SCH Nutrition and Dietetic Department but works in partnership with the RHW NICU multi-disciplinary team to ensure safe and accurate delivery of nutrition for vulnerable and high-risk infants admitted to the RHW NICU.

The location of this AHA role is within the RHW NICU – which is a statewide specialist referral service that provides care to newborn babies with complex illnesses requiring sophisticated technology and surgery.

The primary purpose of the NICU AHA is to provide support to dietetic and nursing staff in preparing oral and enteral feeding regimens. The AHA is responsible for accurate and safe measurement, preparation and storage of breast milk, fortifiers and formula that are required for a patient's feeding regimen. The AHA will also be required to assist the NICU dietitian and nursing staff in regular audits to ensure growth and nutrition policies and procedures are adhered to.

The critical nature of the babies admitted to the RHW NICU mean that their condition can change rapidly. Consequently, adjustments to their feeding regimens are made regularly. The AHA will need to have a high level of communication with the NICU multi-disciplinary team to ensure the appropriate adjustments are made to their breast milk fortification and/or formula. The AHA will need to develop strong relationships with the NICU team and be flexible to a changing level of patient acuity.
