About VGSO

The Victorian Government Solicitor's Office (VGSO) serves the rule of law exclusively for the State.

The VGSO provides responsive legal services exclusively for the Victorian Government and public sector. Our place within government ensures we are at the centre of legal change, reform and problem-solving. We operate as a service-driven legal professional practice and strive for excellence in this competitive environment. In all aspects of our operations, we aim to role model and live by our values: Responsiveness, Integrity, Insight, Collaboration and Excellence.

About the Role

This role is a unique opportunity to contribute to the success of the Victorian Government Solicitor's Office by delivering high-quality legal advice and services to our clients, with a particular focus on Native Title and Aboriginal cultural heritage matters.

Working under supervision, you will manage a diverse range of legal issues that are central to the rights and interests of Traditional Owners and the broader community.

This role offers scope to broaden your legal expertise across other practice areas, including Commercial, Property, and Intellectual Property advice and transactions.

We actively encourage team members to expand their skills and experience in these areas, fostering a collaborative and multidisciplinary approach to legal practice.

Benefits

VGSO offers an inclusive, collegiate and collaborative work environment where you will be well-supported and mentored to develop your knowledge. You will also be given excellent career opportunities to progress and develop within the organisation.

VGSO embraces flexibility and recognises the importance of work-life balance. We offer a flexible hybrid work arrangement, allowing employees to spend half of their time working remotely and the other half in the office. This setup encourages collaboration and strengthens team connections, while supporting your ability to achieve a healthy work-life balance.

Skills and Experience (for Soli, SS and PS roles)

  • Ideal candidate will have 1+ years post-admission experience
  • Demonstrated ability to manage legal matters and file administration within budget, under appropriate supervision, while delivering high-quality written and oral advice that simplifies complex legal issues.
  • Experience drafting and negotiating a range of commercial legal documents with attention to detail and legal precision.
  • Strong legal research and analytical skills, with the ability to undertake structured and focused analysis of complex legal issues.
  • Willingness to contribute to team and organisational development through mentoring junior staff, participating in client secondments, and engaging in knowledge-sharing initiatives.
  • Capacity to assist in litigation matters, including instructing counsel in courts and tribunals, particularly in Native Title proceedings, under supervision.
