POSITION PURPOSE
The Chef is responsible for providing nutritious, balanced, and culturally inclusive meals for all children at Grace Village Early Learning. This role supports children's wellbeing and development by ensuring safe food handling, maintaining compliance with regulatory requirements, and embedding healthy eating practices as part of our holistic educational philosophy.
The Cook contributes to the service's commitment to quality under the National Quality Standard (NQS) particularly Quality Area 2: Children's Health and Safety and Quality Area 7: Governance and Leadership — and upholds Grace Village's philosophy, values, and daily commitments.
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum Certificate III in Commercial Cookery or Hospitality (Commercial Cookery) or equivalent.
- Certificate in Safe Food Handling and Menu Planning/Nutrition (or willingness to complete).
- Valid Working with Children Check.
- Minimum 2 years' experience as a cook in an Early Childhood Service or 3+ years in a similar setting.
- Demonstrated knowledge of food safety standards (FSANZ) and WHS legislation.
- Understanding of Education and Care Services National Law & Regulations and the National Quality Framework (NQF).
POSITION OBJECTIVES
- Prepare and deliver healthy, balanced meals and snacks that meet children's nutritional needs, cultural backgrounds, and dietary requirements.
- Ensure all food preparation complies with health, hygiene, and safety regulations.
- Support the service's educational goals by incorporating food preparation into children's learning where appropriate.
- Build and maintain positive relationships with families, educators, and the wider team.
- Contribute to the service's Quality Improvement Plan (QIP) and uphold Grace Village's philosophy of excellence in care and education.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Children's Health and Safety (NQS QA2)
- Prepare, cook, and serve nutritious meals for children aged 0–5 years in line with approved menus and dietary guidelines.
- Accommodate allergies, intolerances, and special dietary or cultural requirements with care and diligence.
- Adhere to all food safety and hygiene standards, including correct food storage, temperature control, and cross-contamination prevention.
- Maintain a clean, hygienic, and inviting kitchen and dining environment.
- Support children's awareness of healthy eating through participation in cooking or food-related learning experiences.
2. Educational Program and Practice (NQS QA1)
- Collaborate with educators to integrate cooking and nutrition experiences into the curriculum.
- Encourage children's participation in simple, safe food preparation and sustainability projects.
- Contribute to documentation and reflections that highlight children's engagement with food and healthy choices.
3. Physical Environment (NQS QA3)
- Maintain kitchen equipment, utensils, and facilities in accordance with WHS standards.
- Identify and report maintenance or safety concerns to the Director/Nominated Supervisor promptly.
- Support the service's sustainability goals through waste reduction, recycling, and mindful resource use.
4. Relationships and Collaboration (NQS QA5 & QA6)
- Foster positive and respectful relationships with children, educators, and families.
- Communicate with families about dietary requirements, menu changes, and cultural inclusivity in meal planning.
- Engage in team discussions, reflective practice, and professional development to enhance food safety and nutrition knowledge.
5. Governance and Leadership (NQS QA7)
- Maintain records, receipts, and menu documentation in line with service policy.
- Assist with stock control, ordering, and budget management under direction from the Director/Nominated Supervisor.
- Contribute to policy review and continuous improvement processes.
- Model professionalism, confidentiality, and integrity in all interactions.
