About The Role
Reporting to the Head of Corporate Affairs Western Australia, the Manager Public Policy and Government Relations WA leads the strategy and team responsible for executing BHP's integrated policy, political engagement and campaign program in support of WAIO and Nickel West. The role is central to driving policy, advocacy and reputational outcomes that manage risk and advance the company's strategic, operational and commercial interests in Western Australia.
This leadership role combines deep policy expertise with the ability to cultivate influential relationships across the political and regulatory landscape. It requires a seasoned operator who can interpret complex policy environments, shape advocacy strategies, and build trust with government officials, elected representatives and policy stakeholders. The role ensures BHP is positioned as a credible and constructive contributor to policy development and decision-making.
Acting as a strategic advisor to the WAIO Asset President and Nickel West Vice President, this role is a part of the broader WA Corporate Affairs Leadership team and BHP Australia's Public Policy & Government Relations Leadership team, ensuring alignment and integration across state and national priorities.
This role is based in Perth, Australia.
Your Accountabilities Will Include, And Not Be Limited To
- Lead the development and execution of BHP's public policy and government relations strategy within Western Australia ensuring alignment with Asset and organisational priorities across both state and national contexts, in close collaboration with the Federal Government team.
- Monitor and analyse political, policy and regulatory developments to anticipate risk and opportunity, and translate insights into strategic advocacy and campaign planning.
- Build and maintain trusted, influential relationships with political stakeholders, government officials, and policy influencers at state and national levels, ensuring BHP's voice is heard early and often in policy formation.
- Represent BHP in high-level political and policy forums, advocating for outcomes that support long-term business success and social value creation.
- Provide strategic advice and counsel to Asset leadership on political, policy and regulatory matters, supporting informed decision-making and risk management.
- Lead and coach the Public Policy and Government Relations team in WA fostering a high-performance culture and supporting professional development.
- Oversee campaign and content development, ensuring messaging is compelling, evidence-based and aligned with BHP's values and reputation.
- Manage task allocation and administration to ensure efficient team operations and delivery.
About You
You are a politically astute and policy-minded leader with a proven track record in government relations, advocacy and strategic engagement. You bring deep expertise in navigating complex political and regulatory environments, and understand how to influence outcomes through relationships, evidence and timing.
Your experience in public policy and government relations might have included roles as a chief of staff or senior adviser to a government minister at the state or national level, as a director or senior leader as a consultant in public policy or public affairs, leadership roles in public policy or corporate affairs in the private sector or experience as a member of the senior executive service of the public service.
You may hold tertiary qualifications in public policy, economics, political science, law or commerce, and apply this foundation to deliver sophisticated, integrated advocacy and campaign strategies. You are known for your ability to anticipate shifts in the external environment and respond with clarity and conviction.
Your leadership is defined by your ability to elevate teams and drive outcomes. You are a trusted advisor to senior stakeholders, offering insightful, politically attuned advice that connects business strategy with public policy and community expectations. Calm under pressure and confident in your judgment, you lead with purpose and precision.
