Pasture-Focused Livestock Assistant Manager
2 weeks ago
- A progressive, sustainable, and environmentally friendly business
- Employers encourage and support professional development and training
- A competitive salary and comfortable accommodations will be provided
This long-term family business operates two properties within 30 minutes of each other, focusing on cattle, sheep, and some cropping for paddock renovations and annual fodder production. The property where you will reside spans 3,000 hectares and is predominantly an Angus cattle breeding operation with some Herefords. They run 2,000 breeding cows and 1,000 head of trade cattle, with plans to increase carrying capacity through further fertilisation and renovation programs.
As part of their paddock renovation and fodder production, they grow winter oats or ryegrass to fatten progeny targeted at the feeder market for steers and cull heifers. Retained heifers will be included in the program, starting with an artificial insemination (AI) program for first calvers. The operation has a seasonal mating program with a tight 8-week joining period for spring calving. All mustering is done using quad bikes and dogs; therefore, a working dog team is necessary due to the terrain. The owner is also happy to offer compensation if you wish to use your own suitable quad or two-wheeler. Contractors are employed for ultrasound pregnancy testing of the cows, which are divided into two groups: early calvers and late calvers. The business focuses on low-stress stock handling, incorporating a weaner breaking program and utilising Agriwebb for all data collection related to cattle, fertiliser, and sales.
The assistant manager is responsible for overseeing day-to-day operations while effectively utilising two farm hands. The main focus will be on livestock health and performance and pasture management across the property. The assistant manager will collaborate with the owners and general manager to achieve weekly and monthly goals related to all aspects of the operation.
Key responsibilities include managing livestock, ensuring that cows are matched to the appropriate paddocks, and implementing grazing rotations as needed. The assistant manager will drive livestock production, oversee spraying, fencing, and water infrastructure, and perform general farm duties. The work team will occasionally assist with marking calves and lambs at the other property.
The Offer
You will be offered a competitive salary package that includes accommodation, electricity, internet, and a tool allowance. The property features a comfortable, large brick home that has recently been painted inside. It includes a nicely manageable garden with a chicken coop, space for a veggie garden, and sheds/carport, all offering complete privacy.
This location is ideal for singles, couples, or families, with school bus access at the main entrance, which is located 1 km from the house. It is 25 minutes from Oberon and 50 minutes from Bathurst, where all major amenities can be found.
The Ideal Candidate
Ideally, you will be an energetic and enthusiastic individual with relevant experience, a passion for agriculture, and a commitment to sustainability and the future growth of the business. You must demonstrate strong leadership skills and the ability to lead by example. The following attributes are essential:
- Hold a valid driver's license
- You should have your own team of trained working dogs
- Experience with livestock and the ability to manage them in a low-stress manner
- Knowledge of pasture management
- Chemical certificate – highly regarded but not essential
- A strong work ethic and attention to detail
- Experience operating all-terrain vehicles (quads)
- Being trustworthy and honest; there will be a strong emphasis on tidiness and thoroughness.
If you feel that you're the right fit for this position, please submit an up-to-date resume along with the contact details of 3 references. Preference will be given to those who supply a cover letter addressing their suitability - that is, tell us what you love about the role and how you think you're the right fit.
