Primary objective
Assist professional officers to manage and conduct specific rangeland research projects, investigating seasonal variability,
stocking rates and grazing strategies underway in Central Australia.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Assist with research development and extension projects for the benefit of the pastoral industry in Central Australia.
2. Develop the skills and knowledge of pastoralists in the Central Australia region through the provision and coordination
of information, training, and advice.
3. Develop and maintain appropriate relationships and communication with key industry groups and stakeholders.
4. Take responsibility for and assist with the day-to-day management of research projects.
5. Undertake data collection, summary, and analysis.
6. Prepare written and oral reports to the department, industry, and funding bodies.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Knowledge of the northern Australia cattle industry including animal nutrition and the management of native pastures.
2. Ability to effectively communicate with cattle producers, technical staff, and researchers.
3. Demonstrated ability to maintain accuracy and scientific rigor in field trials.
4. Demonstrated interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills, and proven ability to prepare accurate and clear
reports.
5. Considerable computer experience including a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office products.
6. Possess a current manual driver's licence, 4WD experience and capacity for travel in remote areas for several days at a
time.
Desirable
1. A degree or diploma in agriculture, environmental science, or similar discipline.
2. Experience in the use and application of crush-side livestock recording systems, GIS, statistical, or other relevant
computer and field data collection technology.
3. Experience in pasture sampling methodology and pasture species identification particularly in extensive rangelands.
