The Role
Teachers at Hedland SHS are focused on creating outstanding outcomes for students and empowering every student who enters our classrooms. We are a collaborative team who are close knit and supportive in a way that only a high quality regional school can be. Our practice is data driven to ensure year on year improvement for our students.

The Learning Support Coordinator (LSC) Teacher will have a hands-on role leading teachers to develop and implement student centred curriculum and assessment adjustments to allow students with both diagnosed and imputed disabilities to achieve success within the School's mainstream context and across its alternative programs. The LSC Teacher will work in collaboration with staff to strengthen the professional development of teaching within the Special Education Needs (SEN) domain. The LSC Teacher will also be responsible for coordinating the School's approach to the Equitable Access to Assessment Policy. A high level of interpersonal skills and drive, with the ability to establish and maintain networks, both internally and externally, will be highly regarded. The successful applicant should have the ability to foster positive relationships with key stakeholders and provide timely support to students, staff and families using a student centred case management model.

Working closely with the Student Support team and Deputy Principals, managing complex cases across all year groups, the successful applicant will ideally have exceptional organisational skills, including the ability to manage time effectively, prioritise, keep accurate records and the ability to analyse data to inform planning and practice that improves outcomes for students. The successful applicant for this position will ideally possess knowledge and skills in some or all of the areas below:

  • Contemporary, evidence-based practices related to Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and various learning disabilities and learning difficulties.
  • Leading the school-wide Individual Education Plan (IEP) process, development, and review of IEPs.
  • Leadership and support of teachers (and Education Assistants) working with identified students that require a significant level of differentiated educational delivery.
  • Supporting the improvement of literacy and numeracy outcomes of students with learning support needs through suitable intervention and differentiation strategies within the classroom.
  • Support the transition of Year 6 students with special educational needs into high school.
  • Lead and support teachers and students implementing Equitable Access to Assessment adjustments.
  • Assist with applying for and coordinating special exam arrangements.
  • Liaison with external agencies and support to ensure planning for students with identified learning support is comprehensive.
  • Applying for and reviewing the schools Disability Resourcing applications.
  • Managing and ensuring compliance with National Consistent Collection of Data (NCCD).
  • Compliance with schools' data recording requirements and processes.

This position may include a small teaching component in alignment with the successful applicant's skill-set and the needs of the School.

Mobility appointments for permanent metropolitan and south west teachers
Eligible permanent teachers who hold a substantive teaching position in a North or South Education Region school, or a South West Education Region school* may elect to undertake this role as a 3-year mobility appointment, with a right of return to their substantive position. At the cessation of the 3-year mobility appointment, teachers can elect to return to their substantive role, or transfer permanently into this school.
