AEMO at the Heart of Energy
AEMO is Australia's independent energy system and market operator and system planner. AEMO's purpose is to ensure safe, reliable and affordable energy today, and enable the energy transition for the benefit of all Australians. Australian governments are now committed to a net zero economy for Australia by 2050 and our vision is to enable this. We have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to co-design the future of our energy systems, and our core values revolve around character, commitment, and connection. Join us as we contribute to this significant transition in the energy sector.
About the role
Strategic Market Reform (SMR) sits with AEMO's Policy and Corporate Affairs team. SMR contributes to the development of reform in Australia's energy market, working in partnership with internal and external stakeholders to inform policy and regulatory processes, and design and implementation of transformational change. This includes mandated and essential reform to support the energy transition, that aims to deliver value to industry and consumers. The DER and Retail Reform team focuses on market and technical integration of Consumer Energy Resources (CER) and Distributed Energy Resources (DER), promoting access to retail competition and supporting consistent market, operations, and regulatory frameworks.
You will contribute to the development of energy markets in Australia, with a particular focus on the retail market and technical integration of CER/DER. The role assists in the development of AEMO proposals in relation to energy market policy and regulation. The aim will be to influence energy market design and ascertain AEMO internal positions so that AEMO is positioned to maximise its contribution to the success of the energy markets in the future.
This is a one-year fixed term contract role, which can be located anywhere in Australia.
What you will be doing
- Work with the Reform team to identify opportunities to influence market designs, policy development and AEMO internal positions so that AEMO is positioned to maximise its contribution to the success of the energy markets in the future.
- Formal and informal analysis of current arrangements and options for improvement in DER/CER and retail markets through reform, considering the external and internal environment to influence energy market development, including economic, policy, regulatory, operational and technology changes.
- Work with team to assess, develop and submit rule change requests and respond to formal consultation papers.
- Develop relationships with internal teams and stakeholders across market bodies, jurisdictions and industry.
- Prepare concise briefs and presentation material for engaging with external stakeholders, senior management and executives.
What you will bring to the role
- Undergraduate qualifications in arts in a relevant discipline such as Economics, Finance, Science or Engineering.
- Experience in the energy industry in a commercial or market body, governmental department or university environment, including experience in energy market or regulatory design, operation or analysis.
- Sound appreciation of the technical and/or economic issues affecting the physical operation of the electricity and gas systems, along with a practical working knowledge of the political, regulatory and economic frameworks in which AEMO and the energy markets are operating.
- Experience in Consumer/Distributed Energy Resources and/or Retail markets in the Australian market preferred.
- Demonstrated experience in producing high quality documents and presenting on content internally and externally, and strong stakeholder engagement capabilities.
In return some of our benefits to you
