NEDC is a national sector collaboration dedicated to developing and implementing a nationally consistent, evidence-based system of care for the prevention and treatment of eating disorders. NEDC is funded by the Australian Government Department of Health and administered by The Butterfly Foundation (Butterfly).
Lived Experience leadership and expertise is critical to achieving NEDC's vision that "all people living in Australia experiencing disordered eating or an eating disorder can access an effective, consistent, and equitable stepped system of care to provide the best chance of recovery". The Lived Experience Lead is a newly created role at NEDC, designed to ensure that the voices of people with lived and living experience of eating disorders, and their families/supports, are embedded across all aspects of NEDC's work.
This role will:
• Lead and embed Lived Experience-informed approaches in NEDC's strategy, policies, programs, and culture, including the implementation of the National Eating Disorders Strategy
• Foster partnerships with Lived Experience-led organisations, peer support networks, clinical services, and sector leaders.
• Support the NEDC team to adopt co-design and co-production practices.
• Create opportunities for people with lived experience to contribute to governance, strategy, research, advocacy, communications, and program design in the eating disorder sector.
• Develop approaches to include and amplify the voices of marginalised communities disproportionately affected by eating disorders.
• Promote a culture of inclusiveness and visibility of lived experience across NEDC.
Key accountabilities are listed below. The successful candidate will work with the National Director to further develop and tailor the role to best respond to the needs of people impacted by eating disorders. NEDC's leadership team supports and facilitates the integration of lived experience perspectives into the team and actively works to support psychological safety for those with lived experience in the team. This position reports to the National Director.
Roles & Responsibilities Include:
Strategy and policy:
• Promote and embed Lived Experience leadership as central to NEDC's work
• Contribute lived experience perspectives to the development of NEDC's priorities and activities
• Work in partnership with the NEDC team to implement the National Eating Disorders Strategy
• Inform strategy through principles of intersectionality, human rights, and social justice
Partnerships and engagement:
• Build relationships with Lived Experience leaders, peak bodies, and Lived Experience-led organisations across the eating disorder and mental health sectors
• Develop strategic partnerships with peer support workers and other Lived Experience professionals
• Engage with key governmental agencies (including the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing) to inform national policy and priorities.
• Represent NEDC in national forums, ensuring lived experience perspectives shape sector responses
System and practice change:
• Identify and facilitate opportunities for lived experience involvement in service and system design, monitoring, and evaluation
• Lead or co-lead projects that strengthen lived experience approaches across the stepped system of care.

Cultural leadership and organisational development:
• Build the capacity of NEDC staff to engage effectively with people with lived experience
• Design approaches to engage marginalised communities who are disproportionately affected and underrepresented
• Promote an inclusive culture that makes lived experience contributions visible and valued
• Communicate effectively with diverse audiences to raise awareness of lived experience perspectives in eating disorders and mental health
Essential Criteria
• Lived experience of recovery from an eating disorder or as a carer of someone with lived or living experience of an eating disorder and demonstrated experience in Lived Experience-designated roles
• Strong understanding of Lived Experience leadership as a driver of service, program, and system design
• Proven ability to work respectfully and collaboratively with people impacted by eating disorders
• Experience developing and delivering organisational or program-level strategy and supporting systemic change.
• Understanding of national strategies, policies, and frameworks relevant to eating disorders and mental health
• Excellent relationship-building and communication skills with diverse stakeholders.
• Project and program management experience including planning, monitoring, and reporting
• Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment and contribute to shared goals
• Must hold a Working With Children clearance for the relevant state/territory and a National Police Check.
