Research Assistant

TOP 4 SELLING POINTS:
- A unique, varied role: perfect for a curious mind who knows a little about a lot
- A unique opportunity to develop the elusive (and nebulous) 'commerciality' that law firms often look for in their recruitment drives
- A founder who will invest in your development and mentor you personally
- A good sampling of a couple different practice areas (perfect for a law student who isn't sure what they want to do when they finish their studies)
When and where?
We are looking for
2 x part-time research assistants
who will work two to three days a week in-person at our Castlereagh Street office.
Who are you?
You're not like everyone else. You are detail-obsessed, intellectually curious, and have a genuine passion for research. You are the kind of person who gets hooked on a topic and dives deep. You definitely read the AFR every morning. You love learning about business, finance, property, and the economy.
You are proactive, reliable, and thrive in environments where you're given autonomy. You enjoy being busy. You are studying law and are looking for a role that gives you real-world experience and proper autonomy - something a bit more dynamic, less administrative and more hands-on than traditional paralegal work.
You are interested in family law, commercial law or planning and environment law (these are the practice areas that most of Kerswell's matters come from, and you'll get good exposure to them).
What will be your role?
You'll be joining
Kerswell Valuation
, a boutique firm specialising in property and business valuations, often in the context of litigation. The work is diverse and intellectually rich, ranging from expert witness engagements to strategic critiques and assumption testing.
Your responsibilities will include:
· Research (some that is legal in nature) and assistance with financial analysis
· Admin, filing, and notetaking
· Marketing and business development support
· Exposure to litigation strategy and valuation methodology
About the Founder
The founder is a self-made, driven professional who started as an analyst at 18 and became an equity partner early in her career. She's now building her own firm and is looking for someone equally hungry to grow. She's sharp, intense, deeply committed to her clients and team, and authentic. She'll push you to be your best, expose you to the areas you're passionate about, and help you build a strong network in the legal industry.
She has recently struck out on her own and is open to helping develop another young, bright professional in a similar way. She believes that the best employment relationships are a two-way street, and she is keen to develop the right young professional's career. She wants to build a great culture where her staff have a say in how their careers develop. She'll expose you to the areas you're passionate about, help you network within the legal industry, and support you in finding your next role in the legal industry.
Why should you want this role?
This is a brilliant first step for a law student (who is also studying commerce, finance or accounting). You'll use your research skills, develop your ability to form arguments, and gain exposure to the legal system. You'll also begin to build a strong network and you'll interact with a wide range of brilliant, experienced barristers and solicitors.
It's not a role for the faint-hearted - but it is perfect for a tenacious and bright young mind.
Sounds like me How can I apply?
Send a customised cover letter and your CV to
about why you think you would be a good fit. The cover letter should detail why you think you will be a good cultural fit, what your professional interests are, and why you think you would be an asset to our team.
