This is an Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander identified position which is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised under section 14(d) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977.

The Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) was established in a critical act of self-determination over 50 years ago as part of the Aboriginal rights protest movement. We provide high-quality, culturally safe legal and support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout NSW and the ACT, and fight for social justice and equity for our communities.

Your Impact

As a valued member of the Civil Law Women's Advocacy Service, you'll play a vital role in providing culturally safe, holistic advocacy and support to Aboriginal women in custody, helping address their legal, social, and personal needs. Each day, you will:

  • Provide culturally safe, strengths-based advocacy and holistic support to women in custody.
  • Develop and implement tailored support and advocacy plans addressing complex socio-legal needs.
  • Deliver ongoing case management to keep clients engaged and progressing towards their goals.
  • Assist with non-legal advocacy and provide written reports to support legal matters as needed.
  • Contribute to program planning, service evaluation, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Uphold ALS values, policies, and professional standards while participating in professional development.

Your Story & Strengths

You are a skilled and passionate advocate who deeply respects the cultural, social, and historical experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. You bring professional excellence alongside a heartfelt commitment to supporting women, empowering communities, and advancing justice. Key strengths include:

  • Identifies as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander with experience in community-based organisations.
  • Skilled in social work, advocacy, case management, or related fields, with strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Knowledgeable and respectful of Aboriginal cultural practices, delivering services in a culturally safe manner.
  • Ability to work independently, manage diverse workloads, and thrive in a start-up or multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Current NSW Driver's Licence with capacity to travel regularly to Silverwater and Dillwynia Correctional Centres.
  • Tertiary qualifications (e.g., Social Work) required, with experience supporting legal practice and working with women in custody is desirable.
