The Opportunity
Our Port Kembla Manufacturing facility is looking for a Shift Fitter in our Blast Furnace maintenance team based in Port Kembla. As a part of the broader Australian Steel Products portfolio, we have six major manufacturing sites at Port Kembla that deliver a variety of products, innovative solutions and services to our export and domestic customers.
You will join a cross-functional team that provides effective maintenance support to the No.5 and No.6 Blast Furnace business units and ensures equipment is maintained to the highest standards to meet our objectives for quality and reliability. In this critical role, you will be the first point of call for maintenance issues and concerns and will assist with inspection of equipment while using your technical background and experience to deliver key outcomes.
This is a shift position that also encompasses a shift relief component to support the Mechanical shift maintenance team as required. You will initially work a 12-hour 24 x 7 rotating roster consisting of rotating days and night shifts, Monday through to Sunday to see out the completion of the commissioning phase of No.6 Blast Furnace around August 2026, at the end of which your shift pattern may be subject to change.
Initially you will undergo training in our Blast Furnace equipment and process at No.5 Blast Furnace. This will then enable you to relieve our existing 5BF shift fitters while they rotate through periods of work to support No.6 Blast Furnace while it is being commissioned. Eventually, you will rotate through this phase of commissioning work at No.6 Blast Furnace as well. When No.5 Blast Furnace is shut down toward the end of 2026, the entire 5BF team will transition to No.6 Blast Furnace.
What Will You Do?
You will apply your technical expertise to ensure that all mechanical equipment is maintained, as well as assisting with the surrounding Blast Furnace department requirements. You will:
- isolate equipment and perform maintenance and repairs
- inspect quality critical equipment and fault find
- resolve issues and fix any non-conformances
- seek ways to continuously improve our maintenance strategies
- Provide feedback on equipment performance
- Attend to mechanical issues as first point of call
More About You
You will have a strong technical background with the ability to work effectively and flexibly in a team environment. You will also have:
- mechanical trade qualifications
- experience with Hydraulics, Pneumatics and complex mechanical drive systems (desirable)
- experience within a heavy industry maintenance function
- experience working both independently and as part of a manufacturing team
- strong attention to detail with the ability to resolve issues effectively and efficiently
- ability to work autonomously under minimal supervision
- excellent communication skills (including digital communication)
- a commitment to your own safety and wellbeing and care for others
