THE ROLE

The Special Adviser role will support General Counsel in overseeing high priority reform work delivered by the Legal Services Branch to the Secretary, the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing, and the department's portfolio Ministers.

The key focus of the role is as legal lead in implementation of child safety reforms, by facilitating passage of legislative amendments, their implementation and related machinery of government changes. This includes being the primary legal liaison, providing high quality and client-focused advice and preparing instruments and other documents. This role will also manage and be supported by a small team of solicitors.

Subject to the needs of the Legal Services branch additional work may be required of this role to support the broader Public Law, Litigation and Inquiries team.

ACCOUNTABILITIES INCLUDE

  • Lead the provision of high-quality, authoritative, client-focused and cost-effective legislation and public law advice and services in relation to complex and sensitive legal and policy matters.
  • Utilise strong specialist knowledge and skills in providing specialist advice to achieve the departmental and/or government policy aims and reforms.
  • Research and prepare written advice to the department and senior stakeholders, presenting legal insights and analysis on cases and developments, ensuring compliance and quality professional outcomes of major pieces of work, reflecting a strong understanding of cross government legal policy and considerations.
