About the Role:

This is an exciting opportunity to shape the future of Computer Science and Software Engineering at Curtin University. As Professor and Discipline Lead, you will provide strong leadership in teaching, research, and engagement, while driving real-world outcomes across the fields of Computer Science and Software Engineering.

You will play a central role in curriculum innovation, advancing research, and contributing to school and university governance, as part of the EECMS Leadership Team. Reporting to the Head of School, the professorial appointment is a continuing teaching/research role that includes the Discipline Lead portfolio for an initial five-year term, with the possibility of renewal.

Specific Duties of a Professor and Discipline Lead include:

  • Provide strategic discipline leadership– oversee line management, workload planning, staff development, and effective communication.
  • Advance teaching and learning excellence– lead innovative, research-informed curricula in Computer Science and Software Engineering, ensuring interdisciplinary integration, accreditation, and high-quality student supervision.
  • Shape research and innovation– build and lead high-performing research teams, secure external funding, mentor emerging researchers, and grow research impact nationally and internationally.
  • Engage and influence stakeholders– champion the discipline across the University, Curtin's global campuses, industry, government, and the wider community.
  • Strengthen school leadership– contribute actively to strategic planning, governance, and decision-making, while modelling the University's values.

This position will be located at Curtin's Bentley Campus, and will also work across Curtin's global campuses.

Your new Team - School of Electrical Engineering, Computing and Mathematical Sciences (EECMS):

Formed in 2017, EECMS unites Curtin's core expertise in computer science and software engineering; artificial intelligence and data science; electrical and electronic engineering; mathematics, statistics and industrial optimisation; actuarial science and sustainable development; physics and astronomy, to better understand and advance our data-driven world. As part of Curtin's Faculty of Science and Engineering, EECMS is one of the university's largest schools, with a rapidly expanding teaching and research portfolio.

The school is at the forefront of emerging fields, including Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Quantum Technologies, Energy Informatics, and Immersive Technologies. Our teaching programs are delivered across Curtin's five global campuses. We are home to state-of-the-art facilities and institutes such as the Green Energy and Electric Park (GEEP), the Curtin Institute of Radio Astronomy (CIRA), the Curtin Institute for Data Science (CIDS) and Computer Superlab, which provide platforms for world-class innovation, industry collaboration, and hands-on learning for students.

Specific responsibilities for this Teaching and Research Academic role include:

Teaching

  • Provide leadership in the design, delivery, and evaluation of high-quality, research-informed curricula in Computer Science and Software Engineering.
  • Deliver engaging teaching across undergraduate, honours, and postgraduate levels, across a range of modes including face-to-face, blended, and online.
  • Foster a culture of teaching excellence by mentoring colleagues and embedding evidence-based pedagogy.
  • Lead major curriculum and accreditation initiatives, ensuring innovation and alignment with industry and professional standards.
  • Supervise the program of study for honours and postgraduate coursework students.
  • Develop and deliver professional development and lifelong learning courses, including offerings for international partner institutions.

Research

  • Undertake internationally competitive research in Computer Science and Software Engineering.
  • Provide leadership in advancing the discipline and its interdisciplinary applications across health, business, science, and engineering.
  • Build and lead collaborative research teams and groups with national and international reach.
  • Secure major competitive funding through partnerships with government, industry, and funding bodies.
  • Produce high-quality, high-impact research outputs to enhance Curtin's global reputation.
  • Supervise and mentor HDR students at honours, masters, and doctoral levels, building capacity for the next generation of researchers.

Service and Leadership

  • Provide strategic leadership to build Curtin's Computer Science and Software Engineering research capacity, teaching portfolio, and international profile.
  • Represent the discipline in cross-disciplinary and cross-campus initiatives within the University.
  • Contribute actively to governance, strategic planning, and decision-making within the School, Faculty, and University.
  • Strengthen partnerships with industry, government, and funding bodies to maximise impact and innovation.
  • Mentor academic staff, foster an inclusive and collegial environment, and support staff development.
  • Model professional behaviour aligned with Curtin's Code of Conduct and Values, setting standards of excellence in leadership.

Who we are looking for – Selection Criteria:

Essential:

Education & Qualifications

  • PhD in Computer Science or a related field.
  • Recognised standing as a leading authority in Computer Science and/or Software Engineering.

Teaching & Mentorship

  • Demonstrated excellence in tertiary teaching, curriculum development, and student supervision at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • Extensive experience in supervising HDR (Higher Degree by Research) students.

Research & Innovation

  • Internationally recognised research profile, including a strong publication record in leading journals and ongoing programs of research.
  • Proven success in securing external research funding, including competitive grants and industry partnerships.
  • Evidence of building and leading collaborative, interdisciplinary research teams.

Leadership & Engagement

  • Demonstrated leadership in Computer Science and Software Engineering at national and international levels, including editorial roles, conference organisation, or major research collaborations.
  • Strong record of engagement with industry, government, and professional bodies to drive research, innovation, and funding opportunities.
  • Experience in academic leadership and management, including strategic planning, people development, and resource allocation.

Communication & Collegiality

  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to foster a supportive, inclusive, and collegial environment.
  • Ability to engage effectively across cultures and disciplines and represent the School/University with impact.

Vision & Governance

  • A clear vision for the future of Computer Science and Software Engineering, including emerging opportunities in research, teaching, and external engagement.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to relevant university policies, procedures, accreditation requirements, and industry regulations.
