Primary objective

Assist classroom teachers with the implementation and provision of quality education programs for students with special

needs and identified disabilities in schools, including planning for intervention and support and providing high level

administrative support to the Special Education Teacher.

Context statement

Alawa Primary school is a small innovative school located in the northern suburbs of Darwin. The school provides a quality

education for a culturally diverse range of students from Preschool to Year 6 with a strong literacy and numeracy focus with

teaching informed by data analysis and review. We are committed to facilitating high quality educational outcomes for all

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Work with teachers to support students with special needs and disabilities in a variety of settings, including assisting with

implementation of individualised educational programs and provision of feedback about student progress in programs.

2. Assist in the preparation/modification of daily classroom materials and activities.

3. Maintain appropriate records for the Special Education Unit and individual students for case management, including

through SAMS, SSIDS and Xuno.

4. Work with limited supervision, including the supervision of students at recess or lunch as well as before and after school.

5. Support the delivery of programs including Allied Health Programs and intervention in collaboration with the Special

Education Teacher.

6. Assist schools in managing student issues identified in a student's health care plan including the administration of

medication and first aid

Selection criteria

Essential

1. Knowledge and experience in the provision of support to students with identified disabilities.

2. Ability to work independently and within a team to ensure outcomes for instructional programs are achieved.

3. High level of confidentially, ethics, maturity and patience.

4. High level of interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate effectively written and orally with staff, students

and parents including people from a variety of cross-cultural backgrounds and/or disabilities.

5. Current Working with Children Clearance Notice (Ochre Card).

6. Highly skilled in the use of ICT systems such as SAMS, Xuno etc

Desirable

1. Formal training in disability.

2. First Aid Certificate.
