Perth, Western Australia Innovate Medtech Full time $104,000 - $130,878 per year

Medtech Scientist-Engineer / Technical PM & Business Dev.

Location:
Perth, WA (remote-friendly for the right candidate)

Company:
InnovateMedtech

Type:
Part-time (0.5 FTE), with strong potential to grow into full-time

Company Description

InnovateMedtech is a medtech innovation studio — a one-stop shop for founders developing medical technologies. We blend business consulting with hands-on science and engineering, supporting clients from hypothesis-led experimentation through to ISO13485-compliant product development and regulatory strategy.

Our projects span the full medtech spectrum: from biosensors and wearables to Class II and Class III implantable devices. We deliver not only engineering but also the core experimental science that underpins successful medical innovation.

With an international network of advisors and clients across Australia, Asia-Pacific, Europe, and the U.S., InnovateMedtech combines global reach with deep technical and commercial expertise.

We're proud of our positive, innovative culture: fast-paced, creative, and collaborative. If you're a curious, practical, and creative soul who enjoys building, experimenting, and getting things done, you'll thrive with us.

Role Description

We are seeking a hands-on Scientist-Engineer / Technical Project Manager to join our growing team on a 0.5 FTE (part-time) basis, with strong likelihood of expanding into a full-time role as our projects multiply.

This is a broad, client-facing role that combines project leadership with rigorous scientific and engineering contributions. You will manage and deliver projects across biosensors, implantable devices, wearables, materials science, chemistry, electronics, and mechanical design.

A key part of this role is hypothesis-led experimentation: applying scientific thinking and experimental design to de-risk and advance new technologies. You will not only manage projects but also do excellent science and engineering, contributing directly to product development and innovation.

This role is well-suited to a recent PhD graduate with industry or consulting experience, but we also welcome applicants with a Master's degree or a Chemical Engineering background. The critical requirement is at least 2-5 years of real-world industry experience — you must understand how the real world works. Startup experience is desirable.

Key Responsibilities

Project Leadership & Management

  • Lead medtech R&D projects across diverse domains and geographies.
  • Develop and manage project plans, budgets, and deliverables.
  • Support business consulting and client relationship-building as part of project delivery.
  • Act as a clear, proactive point of contact with clients and international partners.

Science & Engineering Delivery

  • Conduct rigorous laboratory and prototyping work.
  • Apply hypothesis-driven experimentation to test, validate, and refine concepts.
  • Contribute across materials science, chemistry, electronics, mechanics, and product design.
  • Experience in defining Project and design requirments and ensuring outputs meet ISO13485-compliant standards where required.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Bridge between specialists (engineers, chemists, industrial designers, regulatory experts).
  • Translate technical complexity into clear, actionable updates for clients.
  • Maintain transparent, positive communication that fosters trust.
  • Contribute to InnovateMedtech's
    positive, creative culture
    — a place where it's fun to work and ideas can thrive.

Must-Haves

  • 2-5 years of
    industry experience
(R&D, engineering consulting, product development, or medtech/related fields).
  • Strong
    project management
    and organizational skills.
  • Basic soldering
    and electronics prototyping skills.
  • Experience with
    chemistry handling
    and laboratory safety.
  • Familiarity with working in a
    chemistry or chemistry lab environment
    .
  • Excellent written and verbal
    communication skills
    .
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Full working rights in Australia and a drivers license.

Desirable Skills & Attributes

  • Master's or PhD in Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Biomedical Engineering, Materials Science, or related discipline.
  • Recent PhD graduates with consulting or industry experience strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Startup experience, or proven ability to thrive in fast-paced, rapidly growing environments where priorities multiply and shift quickly.
  • Exposure to medical devices, biosensors, or Class II/III implantable technologies.
  • Knowledge of ISO13485 and medtech regulatory pathways.
  • Understanding of the Biodesign framework (highly desirable).
  • CAD design experience (e.g., SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or equivalent).
  • Hands-on maker/DIY hobbyist mindset — enjoys prototyping, tinkering, and solving problems creatively.
  • Passion for innovation, startups, and medtech challenges.
  • Basic chemistry and laboratory skills, including chemical handling, pipetting, and standard lab techniques.
  • Familiarity with analytical and characterization methods such as NMR, FTIR, SEM, EDS, and other micro-characterization techniques.
  • Experience in materials science and characterization is highly desirable
