We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Claims Specialist to oversee and manage our Sompo & SURA insurance claims. The primary focus is on managing a portfolio of complex and high-value public liability claims from notification to resolution and includes but is not limited to assessing liability, determining quantum and negotiating settlements. The role requires strong technical expertise in liability claims handling and a sold understanding of legal principles and policy interpretation, and a strong focus on client service delivery.

Reporting to the Claims Manager, Sompo & SURA, this position will see you managing end-to-end handling of public liability claims, including coverage analysis, liability assessment, quantum evaluation and settlement within delegated authority.

Additionally, you will have responsibility for the following:

  • Interpreting and applying relevant policy wordings, including Broadform and construction liability wordings.
  • Assessing evidence and legal advice to determine exposure, reserves and settlement strategies.
  • Engaging with brokers, insurers, third party claimants and service providers to progress claims and achieve a timely outcome.
  • Accurately maintaining claim files, reserves, and system records to meet internal and external audit standards.
  • Applying in-depth professional knowledge, judgement and understanding to interpret procedures and ensure all activities conducted are compliant with all relevant legislations, regulations, codes and Company policies and procedures.

We are on the lookout for someone who can bring the following experience:

  • Knowledge of Personal injuries Proceedings Act and Civil Liability Act will be viewed favourably.
  • Demonstrated experience in end-to-end claims management, with a strong emphasis on Liability insurance.
  • Law degree highly beneficial.
  • Demonstrated experience in interpreting policy wordings and managing complex claims, including assessment, reserving, and settlement.
  • Proficient organisational and time management skills with demonstrated ability to work will under pressure, establish and respond to changing priorities, manage multiple tasks and meet competing deadlines by using judgement and initiative.
  • Adaptable and proactive, with a growth mindset and willingness to embrace change and continuous improvement.
  • Proficient understanding of relevant legislation and industry standards, including the Trade Practices Act, General Insurance Code of Practice, Insurance Contracts Act, and Privacy Act.
