Who we are
Biosecurity Plant and Science Services Division uses evidence and science to protect Australia's plant health status. We support agricultural productivity, competitiveness and trade in plant products. We strengthen Australia's plant pest prevention, preparedness and response capabilities in Australia and regionally.

The Plant Sciences and Risk Assessment Branch is an inclusive, diverse work area that develops science-based policies that protect Australia's plant-based industries, the natural environment and the community from exotic plant pests and diseases. The branch also provides scientific and technical submissions that help to maintain, improve and open overseas export markets for Australian plants and plant products.

The Jobs
Key responsibilities of these roles include:


• writing and editing major evidence-based biosecurity documents

• contributing to biosecurity policy development through managing complex projects and reviews

• preparing risk assessment and policy documents to assist with gaining and maintaining export market access for Australian plant products

• supervising junior staff and developing project plans and team objectives

• providing accurate and specialised biosecurity and technical advice about imported plant products and preparing and editing reports, briefs and other correspondence

• engaging and collaborating with stakeholders, technical experts, industry, trading partners and other government agencies on biosecurity issues.

Please note that this recruitment process will initially be used to fill several vacancies in the branch and that the roles may be able to be performed from any of the locations listed above. The merit pool established through this selection process, which is valid for a period of eighteen months from the date the vacancy was advertised in the Public Service Gazette, may be used to fill future ongoing vacancies in the branch where the duties are of a similar nature.

Eligibility

What we are looking for
Knowledge and experience
Knowledge or an understanding of plant biosecurity in a national and international framework would be an advantage.

Mandatory qualifications
A tertiary qualification in a relevant science discipline (e.g. plant pathology, entomology, plant biosecurity or general biological, agricultural or environmental science) is mandatory.
