About Us

The Nepean Mental Health Centre provides inpatient care for people experiencing acute mental health issues through the short-stay Psychiatric Emergency Care Centre (PECC), the Acute Mental Health Unit, Mental Health High Dependency Unit, and Older Persons Mental Health Unit. We support our Patients by linking them to case managers for ongoing treatment and support within an environment appropriate to the person's needs.

We're seeking a passionate Adult Mental Health Carer Peer Worker (CPW) to join our dynamic PWCAC Team. This unique role draws on personal lived experience to provide emotional and practical support, advocacy, and education to carers of adults facing mental health challenges. By empowering carers to navigate services and fostering resilience throughout the recovery journey, the CPW plays a vital role in promoting hope, connection, and wellbeing. Grounded in the NSW Peer Worker Capability Framework and the NSW Carers Charter, this position champions the voice of carers and ensures their needs are recognised and respected within the mental health system.

As a key contributor to service development and quality improvement, the CPW collaborates with the Senior Consumer Peer Worker and the broader mental health workforce to co-facilitate carer groups, support consumer experience initiatives, and enhance carer representation. Through active involvement in the Consumer and Carer Council, the CPW helps shape governance and co-design processes, ensuring carer perspectives inform every level of care planning and delivery.

What you will bring to the role

• Lived experience of caring for an adult with significant mental health challenges and a demonstrated recovery journey
• Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work (carer) or readiness to work towards completing; or qualifications in health or other relevant qualification, e.g. degree, diploma or certificate
• Ability to engage and support adult carers from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds in a respectful, trauma-informed, and empowering manner
• Strong interpersonal, communication, and advocacy skills, with the ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams and a wide range of service providers
• Understanding of recovery-oriented mental health principles and the unique role of peer work in adult mental health services
• Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality, personal boundaries, and work ethically within a health care setting. This includes evidence of consistent demonstration of behaviours that reinforce the CORE values of our organisations and the NSW Code of Conduct with all stakeholders including families, colleagues, and others
• Computer competence and literacy including use of health database systems and associated programs
• NSW drivers' licence and willingness to use same for work purposes
