Brisbane, Queensland, Australia Peppercorn Recruitment Full time $119,802 - $144,200 per year

Brisbane CBD | Permanent | Flexible Full-Time | $POA (Queensland Treasury AO6 band)

A unique opportunity for lawyers and analytical thinkers to shape policy and legislation at the heart of government.

If you're a lawyer who enjoys working with legislation, interpreting complex legal frameworks and advising on big-picture policy issues, this could be the ideal next step - a genuine move away from private practice into a role that influences how Queensland's revenue laws are made and applied.

The Role

As a Senior Policy Officer in the Policy and Legislation Division of the Queensland Revenue Office (QRO), you'll help shape and maintain the State's revenue legislation.

You'll work across a wide range of issues that impact Queensland's taxation, royalties and grants - from advising on legislative reform to responding to policy questions affecting industries such as property, resources and infrastructure.

Your work will involve:

  • Analysing and interpreting complex legislation and case law
  • Providing clear, practical policy advice to senior government stakeholders
  • Drafting policy proposals and contributing to legislative reform
  • Responding to Ministerial and high-level government correspondence
  • Liaising with Parliamentary Counsel and Treasury officials on legislative drafting
  • Reviewing revenue laws in other jurisdictions and recommending best practice approaches

It's intellectually stimulating work that blends legal reasoning, policy insight and real-world impact.

About You

This role will suit a lawyer with around 3–5 years' post-admission experience who wants to apply their legal and analytical skills outside traditional practice.

You might currently be working in:

  • Commercial, property, tax or infrastructure law, or
  • Family law, wills and estates, or general practice - where you regularly interpret legislation, deal with complex structures or entities, and consider how legal principles apply in real-world scenarios.

You'll enjoy:

  • Analysing detailed legal or policy questions
  • Researching and interpreting legislation and court decisions
  • Drafting concise, well-reasoned advice
  • Thinking critically about how laws can be improved

Government experience is not essential - what matters most is strong legal reasoning, intellectual curiosity and a genuine interest in public policy.

Why Join Queensland Treasury

  • Contribute to policy that directly shapes Queensland's economy and community outcomes
  • Work in a highly regarded, collaborative and professional policy team
  • Enjoy excellent work-life balance and hybrid working options
  • Develop transferable skills in legislative drafting, stakeholder engagement and policy design
  • Permanent full-time role with strong internal career pathways

Salary

Given these roles are at the AO6 level, your base salary will be between $119,802 and $127,941. In addition to this, you will be paid superannuation of 12.75% taking your total remuneration package to
~$134,800 – $144,200 p.a.
