Brisbane, Queensland, Australia Department of Transport and Main Roads Full time

Make a real impact on road safety and policy reform in Queensland. As a Policy Advisor (RR&ET), you'll respond to emerging community issues, develop smart policy solutions, and deliver high-quality advice and documentation – helping modernise legislation and reduce red tape.

An exciting opportunity exists for a Policy Advisor to join the Road Rules & Emerging Technology (RR&ET) on a temporary basis

The Road Rules & Emerging Technology (RR&ET) team plays a vital role in the daily lives of every Queenslander. We create, update, and share the Queensland Road Rules, which apply to everyone - whether you're driving, riding, or walking. Our aim is to make the rules simple to understand, follow, and enforce, ensuring everyone travels safely.

Road rules are often the first laws we learn as kids and, unfortunately, the ones most commonly broken - even by otherwise law-abiding people. They spark lively debates at family barbeques and attract significant attention from the media, politicians, and the public.

We also shape the future of transport by regulating emerging technologies. This includes cutting-edge enforcement cameras for mobile phone and seatbelt offences, leading the way in e-scooter regulation, and preparing for driverless vehicles.

Our team is part of the Land Transport Safety and Regulation (LTSR) Branch, which works to keep Queensland's transport system safe and resilient across road and rail.

In the role of Policy Advisor (RR&ET) your responsibilities will include:

  • Responding to a broad range of community correspondence addressing hot topic and emerging issues.
  • Researching, analysing and developing policy, legislative, and business solutions to reduce red tape, modernise policy and legislation, and improve road safety.
  • Preparing a range of official government documentation including reports, briefing notes, meeting papers, cabinet submissions, and options papers.
  • Providing evidence-based, logical and timely advice to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Coordinating activities or projects to ensure the effective delivery of policy outcomes.

Mandatory Qualifications And Conditions

  • Due to this role having access to sensitive data, a criminal history check will be undertaken prior to appointment to the role.

Requirements of the role

To be successful in the role you will need to:

  • Manage your own time and deliver work within agreed milestones,
  • Write well in a range of forms, with clear and concise communication skills,
  • Conduct detailed and accurate research and analysis on a range of road safety and legislative topics; and
  • Work well in a team and with a range of internal and external stakeholders.
