Collections Officer – Commercial, Consumer & Legal Recoveries

Location: Bayside | Employment Type: Casual with view to Part-time and Full-time Roles | Start: Immediate

Are you a confident communicator with a strong background in both commercial and consumer debt recoveries? We're seeking an experienced Collections Officer to join our professional team, managing accounts from early arrears through to legal recovery.

About the Role

This role involves a mix of commercial and consumer collections, requiring a skilled negotiator who can balance empathy with firmness. You'll be responsible for conducting phone demands, issuing formal notices, and progressing matters through to legal recovery when necessary.

You'll work closely with clients, debtors, and legal representatives to achieve successful outcomes while maintaining professionalism and compliance at all times.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage a portfolio of commercial and consumer accounts through all stages of recovery.
  • Conduct telephone collection calls and demand conversations in a firm but professional manner.
  • Negotiate and establish realistic payment arrangements to resolve overdue balances.
  • Issue written demand notices and follow up via phone and email.
  • Prepare case documentation for escalation to external legal representatives.
  • Liaise with solicitors, clients, and internal stakeholders to monitor recovery progress.
  • Maintain detailed records of all communication, actions, and outcomes.
  • Ensure compliance with the Australian Consumer Law, Privacy Act, and relevant collections legislation.

Skills & Experience

  • Demonstrated experience in commercial and consumer debt collection.
  • Minimum of 3+ years' experience in commercial and consumer debt collection is required.
  • Proven ability to manage high volumes of telephone demands and negotiate effectively.
  • Sound knowledge of collections procedures, from early arrears to litigation.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a professional phone manner.
  • Experience preparing legal documentation and liaising with solicitors.
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • Understanding of the Penalty Interest Rates Act 1983 (Vic) and other state-specific recovery legislation (advantageous).
  • Australian work rights are required for this position.
  • Minimum qualification of Certificate or Diploma level is required.
