About the role

As the Manager, Systems, Training & Insights at Sydney Airport, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of safety and wellbeing across one of Australia's most iconic transport hubs. This is a strategically significant and high-impact opportunity to lead a specialist team of SMEs focused on continuous improvement, safety systems, reporting, and training initiatives.

You'll drive the development and implementation of Sydney Airport's Safety Management System (SMS), integrating Work Health & Safety (WHS), and Aviation Safety requirements. You'll be responsible for board-level safety inputs, system audits (ISO 45001 and MOS Part 139 SMS for Aerodromes), and the delivery of insights that influence both day-to-day operations and long-term strategic direction.

This broad role combines big-picture thinking with attention to detail—ensuring the business is supported through fit-for-purpose systems, specialist guidance, and high-level safety governance. You'll lead initiatives that embed our Safety & Wellbeing Strategy, provide clarity and consistency across policies and procedures, and maintain effective safety training and digital platforms like and Safeguards.

If you're methodical, action-focused and ready to influence culture and compliance at scale, this role offers the opportunity to drive lasting change within a complex and fast-paced environment.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to

  • Lead and champion the Safety & Wellbeing Strategy and Safety Management System (SMS), ensuring alignment with WHS and aviation legislation, ISO standards, and strategic business priorities.
  • Lead and guide your team in the delivery of Safety & Wellbeing Strategy projects that deliver lasting change and improved safety culture among our people and airport community.
  • Provide strategic direction and support for SMS assurance programs, ISO 45001 certification, while integrating systems across aviation safety, risk, and safety domains.
  • Oversee the planning, implementation, and evaluation of technical and compliance training, including development of the SYD Academy and delivery of key leadership development programs.
  • Support the business through expert system and compliance advice, stakeholder engagement, and board-level safety reporting and insights.
  • Manage and coach a team of specialists across systems, training, and insights, promoting a culture of collaboration, excellence, and continuous improvement.
  • Ensure digital learning systems and reporting platforms (e.g., , Safeguards) are optimised to support compliance, provide meaningful data insights, and enable transparent governance.

About you

  • Tertiary qualifications in Work Health & Safety or a related field; safety or integrated management systems auditing certification essential.
  • Strong knowledge of WHS, aviation (desirable), and environmental legislation, including demonstrated experience with ISO 45001, 14001 or 9001 standards.
  • Proven experience in setting up, managing, and auditing integrated or safety-specific management systems in complex, high-risk environments such as infrastructure, transport, construction, rail, or utilities.
  • Strong leadership experience, with a track record of managing high-performing specialist teams and delivering training and strategic safety initiatives across large organisations.
  • Highly developed stakeholder engagement, influencing, and project/change management skills—able to work cross-functionally and drive meaningful outcomes.
  • Strong Microsoft application skills, with a detail-oriented and methodical approach to systems, data, and reporting—balanced by strategic thinking and a focus on delivering results.
  • Experience in policy writing, governance, and compliance reporting, ideally with responsibility for board or executive-level safety inputs.
