Principal Power Systems Engineer

  • Full time position
  • Based in North Sydney, NSW

The Principal Power Systems Engineer will lead the delivery of advanced power system modelling, technical studies, and grid connection analysis for utility-scale renewable energy projects, with a focus on solar PV and battery energy storage systems (BESS). This role requires expert technical knowledge, hands-on experience with modelling tools, and proven project delivery in the context of Australia's National Electricity Market (NEM).

Responsibilities

  • Lead grid connection and dynamic modelling studies for solar, BESS, wind, and hybrid generator projects using PSCAD, PSSE, and DIgSILENT PowerFactory.
  • Develop, validate, and optimize power systems models for generator performance standards and compliance with NEM (including R0, R1, R2 processes).
  • Conduct steady-state, transient, and dynamic stability, load flow, short-circuit, and risk analyses for renewable asset integration.
  • Advise and liaise with project developers, clients, EPCs, and regulatory bodies to support connection applications and ensure compliance.
  • Mentor and coach junior engineers in power systems analysis and preparation of technical documentation, connection packs, and modelling reports.
  • Translate regulatory requirements and grid code changes into practical modelling and study methodologies for renewable energy deployments.
  • Represent the engineering team in industry working groups, technical forums, and grid modelling standard discussions.
  • Support business development, technical client presentations, and stakeholder engagement as a recognized subject matter expert.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or related field; PhD highly regarded.
  • 5+ years' experience in power system modelling, grid connection, and generator studies for renewables.
  • Advanced knowledge of PSCAD, PSSE, DIgSILENT, and grid connection frameworks in Australia (NEM, AEMO, NSPs).
  • Understanding of generator technical standards, control systems, and small signal stability.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills for multidisciplinary collaboration.
