Primary objective
Lead and manage a small team to plan and deliver bushfire management programs. Promote and maintain fire resilience within the
community in partnership with Volunteer Bushfire Brigades, landholders and other stakeholders.
Context statement
Bushfires NT undertakes fire management programs, including compliance and enforcement, planned to burn operations, supporting and
undertaking wildfire suppression activities, and working closely with volunteers.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide sound leadership and mentoring of operational staff and volunteers to achieve safe and effective fire and land management
outcomes.
Support the development of and oversee the sound management of operational program budgets.
Provide expert technical and logistical support to develop, implement and manage fire management programs and plans.
- Undertake the responsibilities of a Senior Fire Control Officer pursuant to the Bushfire Management Act 2016 (the Act), ensuring
responses to bushfire incidents, investigation activities and issuing of permits.
- Work collaboratively with volunteer bushfire brigades and other stakeholder groups to promote understanding of and compliance with
the Act policies, processes and standard operating procedures and promote a safe work environment.
6. Lead and participate in incident management teams in a functional AIIMS role during the annual fire danger period or during complex
or multiple emergency situations.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Demonstrated sound leadership and experience in managing staff, budgets and project resources.
Relevant tertiary qualification(s) and sound experience in fire management or related conservation management.
Demonstrated experience in wildfire suppression including the ability to lead operational emergency response activities involving staff,
volunteers, contractors and other stakeholders.
4. Demonstrated experience and skills in incident management and knowledge of incident management policy and practice.
5. Well-developed knowledge of WHS legislation, or the ability to quickly obtain.
6. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders.
7. Ability to understand and interpret legislation and apply this knowledge to a variety of situations.
- Current manual Northern Territory drivers licence, preferably medium rigid or higher and Working with Children (Ochre) Card or ability
to obtain.
Desirable
1. Qualification in Training and Assessment
2. Qualification in one of the functional areas of AIIMS, Compliance or Aviation or Plant Operations.
Further information
During periods of heightened operational activity, the incumbent will be required to provide operational support across the Territory,
including travel and work in remote locations, and will be required to undertake remunerated, rostered on-call responsibilities as the
Northern Territory Duty Officer including after hours and on weekends. The successful applicant is required to provide a current criminal
history check. A criminal history will not exclude an applicant from this position unless it is relevant to the position.
