Birriliburu (BPL) is seeking a passionate and experienced Healthy Country Coordinator to lead and support the delivery of our Healthy Country Plan, working closely with Traditional Owners, ranger teams, and partner organisations across the ecologically and culturally significant Birriliburu Indigenous Protected Area (IPA).
Spanning over 6.6 million hectares and located across the Little Sandy Desert, Gibson Desert, and Gascoyne regions, the IPA is recognised nationally for its environmental and cultural importance. This role offers a unique opportunity to work alongside Traditional Owners and contribute meaningfully to Indigenous-led land management and cultural knowledge preservation.

- Facilitate knowledge exchange between Traditional Owners and western science and support the recording and use of Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK).
- Manage and report on multiple funding agreements, including budget planning, grant writing, and acquittals.
- Work in close partnership with Traditional Owner women, supporting their participation in cultural and conservation work and building their leadership capacity.
- Maintain and build collaborative relationships with conservation, scientific and government partners, supporting Birriliburu's active involvement in wider desert initiatives.
- Assist in planning and delivering training and development opportunities for rangers, including workshops, cross-cultural exchanges and knowledge-sharing trips.
- Uphold governance practices that support Traditional Owner self-determination, decision-making and project design aligned to cultural priorities.
- Ensure all fieldwork and program delivery complies with WHS standards and Duty of Care obligations.
About You:
We're looking for someone with:
- A strong commitment to Indigenous land management, self-determination, and cross-cultural engagement.
- Proven experience in natural resource management, community development, or ecological science.
- The ability to work both independently and collaboratively in remote environments.
- High-level project management, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Confidence using 4WD vehicles in off-road conditions and willingness to travel regularly to remote locations.
- Strong digital literacy and competency in reporting, data analysis, and GIS (preferred).
Desirable: Experience in arid ecology, Healthy Country Planning, or Indigenous ranger coordination will be highly regarded.
Why Join Us?
- Work with a dedicated, values-driven team passionate about Country, Culture, and Community.
- Contribute to meaningful environmental outcomes and Indigenous leadership in conservation.
- Based in Perth with regular travel to Wiluna and across the remote Birriliburu IPA.
- Supportive and flexible work culture with opportunities for professional development.
