At SBS, we embrace difference, and we welcome applications from people of all backgrounds.
We also acknowledge the unique contribution that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples make to our society and our workplace through their enduring and continued connection to land, sea, sky and community.
This role is classified as Level 6 role under SBS Australia's current Enterprise Agreement. The successful applicant will be offered remuneration that is commensurate with their skills and experience and in alignment with this framework.
The role involves day shifts across the week, with working times that may need to be adjusted depending on news events, such as the Federal Budget, elections or major news events.
About Us
SBS is one of the world's most unique and innovative media organisations, producing trusted, meaningful, and engaging content that exists for all Australians to inspire, support and celebrate the diversity of our multicultural society.
Our purpose, for the last 50 years, has reflected and explored the evolving diversity of Australia, investing in initiatives to deepen its connections with communities, sharing their stories and giving a voice to those often unheard, with the aim of increasing understanding and respect of the differences that make up Australia.
SBS is a truly distinctive network, showcasing multicultural, multilingual and First Nations stories otherwise untold in the Australian media.
The Role
We're looking for an experienced and driven Digital News Editor to lead and drive our news coverage on the SBS News website and app, and Apple News.
This is an exciting role for someone looking to make a difference in the world of online journalism. You'll be responsible for steering the daily news agenda of SBS News' written content, working with senior editors and guiding journalists to deliver news that is accurate, timely, impactful, and deeply aligned with SBS's Charter.
You will commission and guide daily news articles, explainers and news-adjacent features, and take the lead on breaking news operations for articles, live blogs and alerts; oversee forward planning for news coverage; and bring a sense of originality and creativity to daily coverage. Your approach is grounded in editorial excellence, empathetic team leadership, audience insight and collaboration. This role works alongside our Video, Social, Audio and TV news teams as well as NITV and in-language teams - making the most of SBS's broader newsgathering for online stories.
You'll contribute to the ongoing development of our publishing strategy, using data and trends to shape daily decisions and future improvements. You'll also be a people-first leader, creating an inclusive and supportive team culture and driving innovation in storytelling and digital publishing formats. This role is a senior editorial touchpoint, and will provide upward editorial referral to digital news teams in the absence of the Managing Editor (Digital), and deputises to the Managing Editor at times.
This is a unique opportunity to shape the future of SBS News' digital offering, and to mentor a team of journalists providing news coverage for a diverse national audience.
About You
You're a passionate and highly skilled digital journalist with a strong editorial instinct and a deep interest and knowledge of national and international news.
You have at least five years of experience in digital journalism, including time in a supervisory role, and have worked in a national newsroom environment.
You'll thrive in a leadership role, providing thoughtful guidance to your team and creating a safe, inclusive and high-performing environment.
You'll have highly developed editorial skills, with the ability to guide accuracy and balance as well as storytelling and newsgathering techniques to others; and identify editorial issues in content prior to publication
You'll have a clear understanding of media law
You enjoy working across breaking news, daily news and news-adjacent content
You have a flair for creating and guiding written journalism, and are passionate about accessible and constructive journalism, keeping the audience front and centre
You're organised and proactive, with the ability to manage multiple priorities
You're a natural collaborator who enjoys working with stakeholders and adjacent teams to maximise distinctive and impactful journalism.
You have demonstrated experience using data and analytics to inform editorial decisions, and you've got the technical know-how to work confidently across CMS platforms, SEO, and digital publishing tools.
You're comfortable in bringing forward ideas to continually evolve our written content, and how best to visualise and augment this on platforms – via graphics and data visualisations
You're a change agent, and someone who's excited by the opportunity play a role in the future of SBS News online, and champion journalism that reflects the diversity of contemporary Australia.
