About This Opportunity

The School of Mathematics and Physics is looking for casual academics who are enthusiastic about sharing their discipline knowledge, who can convey concepts to students with clarity, who are able to provide feedback in a timely fashion, and who are interested in developing and applying teaching strategies to support student learning in a range of different settings. Casual Academics are expected to foster caring, collaborative, and inclusive classrooms and laboratory environments.

• Delivering practical and applied teaching sessions

Background

• Applicants should possess strong academic background in mathematics or any area of science (including medical / biomedical science), and additionally have good understanding of computer programming fundamentals (conditionals, loops, arrays, functions, graphing). 

• Prospective SCIE1000/1100 casual academics should normally be achieving a GPA of at least 5.5 and have completed at least 18 months of undergraduate study, and not be studying any first year courses

• Honours, Masters by Research and PhD candidates are encouraged to apply.  Postgraduate coursework students with completion of at least one semester of full-time postgraduate study are also eligible to apply.

These positions are casual academic appointments. The casual rate will vary depending on the type of work completed. Please view our various casual academic pay scales.

Tips / Notes

• New SCIE1000/1100 applicants should request 4 hours of paid work a week. This is equivalent to 1 standard practical and includes the contact and preparation/meeting time. Experienced SCIE1000/1100 casual academics may request more hours.

• International students should ensure they have a visa that permits this type of casual employment before applying for a position as a casual academic.

• Note that the application involves uploading a video explanation in answer to a question (choose between two questions provided in the application).

• Practicals will start in Week 1 of semester and will run for most weeks of semester.  The exact schedule is to be determined.

• Experienced SCIE1000/1100 casual academics can also apply for a lead casual academic position – if you are interested in this, please add a comment at the end of your application. Normally lead casual academics have completed or are completing an honours degree.

• If you are able and willing to undertake hours the advanced version of this course (SCIE1100), please indicate this with a comment at the end of your application.

If you are shortlisted, you will be contacted and will need to attend an interview. These are usually short (5-10 mins) and held on Zoom in December 2025. Details of interview times will be shared within a week of the job ad closing.
