About the team

Our Technology team is the backbone of the business, building and maintaining the information technology infrastructure that support Coles Group. As a part of the Technology team, you get the opportunity to work through complex, challenging, meaningful problems using large data sets and new technologies to expand your skills and experience.

Key responsibilities include:

DevOps Strategy & Leadership

  • Define and lead the implementation of DevOps strategy, tooling, and automation standards across the domain's engineering squads.
  • Drive adoption of best-practice CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure-as-code, configuration management and release automation.
  • Partner with architecture and platform teams to define scalable, secure, and resilient infrastructure patterns and practices.
  • Act as a key contributor to domain-wide technology planning, operational readiness, and delivery health.

Platform Reliability & Operational Excellence

  • Own the health, availability and performance of critical platforms and services within the domain.
  • Implement and continuously improve monitoring, alerting, logging and telemetry systems to drive observability and reduce mean time to recovery (MTTR).
  • Establish and maintain SLOs/SLAs for platforms, working with engineering squads to meet operational expectations and address gaps.
  • Lead post-incident reviews and problem management processes, embedding learnings and continuous improvement.

Security, Compliance & Governance

  • Ensure DevOps practices align to enterprise security, change management and compliance frameworks.
  • Embed secure configuration and access management principles into infrastructure, deployment and automation pipelines.
  • Collaborate with Cyber Security and Risk teams to support audits, vulnerability management and remediation initiatives.
  • Provide governance around tooling, environments, and release practices to manage risk and operational consistency.

Team Leadership & Capability Uplift

  • Lead, coach and develop a high-performing team of DevOps engineers and reliability specialists, driving a culture of ownership, collaboration and automation.
  • Build capability across the domain in DevOps ways of working, acting as a subject matter expert and trusted advisor to engineering and delivery teams.
  • Drive cross-team alignment on tooling, patterns and environment management to reduce friction and improve delivery velocity.

About you and your skills

  • 5-7 years of experience in DevOps, site reliability engineering or platform operations, with at least 2–3 years in a leadership or management capacity.
  • Proven track record designing and scaling DevOps practices across multiple teams or squads in a large, complex technology environment.
  • Hands-on experience with cloud-native infrastructure and automation toolsets such as AWS, Azure, Kubernetes, Terraform, GitHub Actions or similar.
  • Demonstrated success improving platform reliability, deployment velocity and system observability through automation, monitoring and incident response practices.
  • Experience working in cross-functional agile delivery environments, partnering with engineering, product, and architecture teams.
  • Strong exposure to operational governance, change management and security compliance frameworks, particularly in enterprise or regulated environments.
  • Deep technical expertise in CI/CD, infrastructure-as-code, monitoring, and cloud platform management across production-grade environments.
  • Strong leadership, coaching and team development skills, with a focus on building a high-performance and collaborative engineering culture.
  • Excellent problem-solving and incident management capabilities, with a calm, data-driven approach to diagnosing and resolving production issues.
  • Strong understanding of security and compliance principles, including identity/access management, secure pipelines and audit traceability.
  • Effective communicator and influencer, able to bridge technical and non-technical conversations and align stakeholders across teams and domains.
  • Tertiary qualifications in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering or a related discipline (or equivalent industry experience).
