As a Engineering Senior Manager in Payments at CBA, you will lead and inspire engineering teams to deliver secure, scalable, and innovative payment solutions that shape the future of banking in Australia. You will drive technical excellence, foster a high-performance culture, and ensure alignment with CBA's strategic objectives and regulatory requirements. Your leadership will be pivotal in transforming the Payments landscape, leveraging modern technologies and frameworks to deliver seamless, reliable, and secure customer experiences.

Key Responsibilities

  • Set and execute the technical direction for Payments engineering, ensuring solutions are robust, scalable, and secure.
  • Oversee the design and delivery of complex payment systems, including real-time payments (NPP), SWIFT, and event-driven architectures.
  • Champion the adoption of cloud-native, serverless, and event-based architectures (AWS, Containers, SQS, SNS, EventBridge, Kafka, Temporal).
  • Guide teams in decomposing monoliths, building microservices at scale, and designing data-intensive APIs.
  • Ensure best practices in DevSecOps, observability (OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Grafana), and automation.
  • Team Management & Coaching
  • Build, mentor, and develop high-performing engineering teams, fostering a culture of continuous learning, psychological safety, and innovation.
  • Drive hiring, onboarding, and upskilling, supporting engineers' career progression using CBA's Engineering Personas and Skills Framework.
  • Encourage risk-taking, constructive challenge, and diversity of thought within teams.
  • Delivery & Governance
  • Ensure timely and high-quality delivery of payment solutions, balancing technical debt reduction with commercial pragmatism.
  • Lead engineering governance, continuous delivery, and simplification initiatives (e.g., cloud migration, event-based architecture).
  • Oversee compliance with regulatory, security, and risk management standards.
  • Stakeholder Engagement
  • Act as a key liaison between engineering, product, business, and external partners to align technical solutions with business goals.
  • Communicate complex technical concepts to senior management and non-technical stakeholders, translating engineering outcomes into business value.
  • Culture, Community & Collaboration
  • Role model CBA's values, championing engineering empowerment, autonomy, and ethical practices.
  • Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and customer-centric engineering culture.
  • Actively engage with the broader engineering community within Payments and across CBA, including Chief Engineers and Principal Engineers, to share knowledge, align on technical strategy, and drive engineering standards.
  • Contribute to cross-domain initiatives, technical forums, and communities of practice, ensuring Payments engineering is both influencing and benefiting from CBA-wide engineering advancements.
  • Support and participate in mentoring, knowledge sharing, and technical leadership activities that strengthen the engineering community across the bank.

We use a broad range of tools, languages, and frameworks. We don't expect you to know them all but experience or exposure with some of these (or equivalents) will set you up for success in this team:

  • Strong understanding of cloud platforms (AWS, serverless, containers), databases (Aurora, RDS, Redis, Oracle), and programming languages (Typescript, Java, Python, C#).
  • Strong understanding of event-driven systems (SQS, SNS, EventBridge, Kafka, Temporal) and modern engineering tooling (GitHub, Terraform, Artifactory).
