We currently have an opportunity available for a Head of Reliability and Assets at the Opal Australian Paper Maryvale Mill.
The Head of Reliability and Assets is responsible for strategic management and maintenance of plant assets and engineering functions, ensuring equipment availability, reliability, safety, and performance to support continuous and efficient mill operations.
The role is a key member of the Maryvale Senior Leadership Team and contributes to whole-of-site strategic and cultural leadership. A core focus is to lead through Opal's Leadership Habits, ensuring a safe, inclusive, and high-performing workplace.
Key indicators of success include:
- A strong safety culture is evident across the department, with TRIFR and LTIFR continuing to trend towards Zero Harm and safety leadership visible at all levels.
- Reliability and asset management activities are delivered on time and within budget.
- Strategy, planning, and project reviews drive continuous improvement in asset performance.
- Reliability measures (MTBF and MTTR) are maintained at agreed levels so that Operations can consistently use equipment to manufacture pulp and paper to specification.
- Plant availability meets budget expectations, with downtime closely monitored (e.g. no fibre, OPIB, OPIN) and addressed to drive improvements.
- Root Cause Analyses (RCAs) are completed on time.
- Work orders are completed as planned, keeping backlog to a minimum. Planned versus unplanned work remains in line with the maintenance and asset management plan.
- Reporting is clear, accurate, and delivered on schedule.
- All reliability and asset activities comply with environmental regulations and audit requirements.
- Reliability and Asset teams are supported and engaged, achieving strong employee engagement scores and progressing skill and career development goals. All team members are up to date with mandatory training.
- There is strong collaboration with Operations, Technical, Planning & Logistics, Site Services & Infrastructure, Safety & Environment, Commercial and HR to deliver improved mill-wide performance.

This is a fantastic opportunity to join a great team, making a meaningful contribution to the safe and effective running of the mill.
Specifically for this role, we expect you will have;
- A bachelor's degree in engineering. Post-graduate qualifications highly regarded.
- Significant senior leadership and management experience at a paper production mill or equivalent manufacturing environment.
Senior leadership team experience within complex, medium to large sized heavy industry or manufacturing organisations. Heavy industry or manufacturing / continuous process environment experience required.
Specialist Asset strategy development and capital planning skills, with evaluations confirming strategy and plan efficacy.
- A deep understanding of and demonstrated ability to apply paper and pulp product technology and development, process optimisation, and quality control and assurance, or the ability to rapidly acquire.
- A Track record of leading and managing contemporary, compliant engineering services.
- The ability to lead through complexity, with strong decision-making and operational judgement across dynamic, cross-matrix functions to support effective decision-making at site level.
- Strong people leader in a unionised environment. Proven ability to lead through leaders, achieve high levels of employee engagement, and develop a pipeline of talent.
- Strong communication and influence skills across diverse audiences, both verbally and in writing and at all levels of an organisation. The ability to negotiate through differences to find common ground or otherwise articulate a sound rationale for change and work to a respectful mutual understanding.
- The ability to build and maintain collaborative relationships across internal peers, the broader company and external contractors and stakeholders.
