What you'll do:

As a Senior Accountant based in Sydney, you will play an integral role in managing the full spectrum of financial operations for a major public sector entity. Your day-to-day activities will involve preparing insightful reports that inform decision-making at the highest levels while ensuring all processes adhere strictly to established standards. You will be instrumental in developing KPIs that measure success against strategic goals and will provide expert guidance on complex accounting matters. By partnering with colleagues across finance functions as well as external agencies such as NSW Treasury, you will help drive continuous improvement initiatives that enhance efficiency and productivity. Your ability to foster positive relationships-both within your immediate team and across broader networks-will be crucial as you work collaboratively to resolve challenges and deliver outstanding client service. Success in this role means not only meeting compliance obligations but also proactively identifying opportunities for process enhancement that benefit both the organisation and its stakeholders.

  • Prepare and deliver comprehensive reports and detailed analysis on organisational financial performance, ensuring accuracy and compliance with relevant standards.
  • Establish, monitor, and maintain robust financial management controls aligned with accounting standards, NSW Treasury guidelines, and best practice principles.
  • Provide specialist technical advice, support, and training on complex financial matters including statutory reporting, funding issues, and accounting policies to ensure organisational compliance.
  • Develop, implement, and report on key financial performance indicators (KPIs) to track progress towards achieving strategic objectives.
  • Conduct thorough financial analysis to inform investment strategies, assess project viability, and optimise returns for various business units.
  • Manage the timely preparation of submissions required by internal or external stakeholders to meet high standards of quality and compliance.
  • Collaborate with finance colleagues to review existing accounting policies and procedures, implementing changes as needed while educating clients on their application.
  • Continuously develop, monitor, and refine financial or taxation policies to identify efficiency gains while maintaining strict adherence to regulatory requirements.
  • Foster strong working relationships with internal teams, senior managers, direct reports (where applicable), customers, stakeholders, industry professionals, consultants, NSW Treasury representatives, and other agencies.

What you bring:

To excel as a Senior Accountant in this public sector setting you will bring extensive experience gained from similar roles where you have demonstrated reliability under pressure along with meticulous attention to detail. Your background includes formal qualifications in accounting/finance plus eligibility for professional membership (CPA Australia/Institute of Chartered Accountants). You possess deep knowledge of current accounting standards/statutory requirements combined with practical expertise advising on technical issues ranging from policy interpretation through budgeting/forecasting/taxation/procurement/project evaluation.

  • Experience in TM1 & PRIME are required
  • A proven record of achievement in accounting roles within either commercial environments or the public sector demonstrating reliability and attention to detail.
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in accounting or finance coupled with eligibility for membership of a recognised professional accounting body such as CPA Australia or Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia.
  • Comprehensive understanding of contemporary accounting standards, NSW Treasury guidelines, statutory reporting requirements, and best practice principles.
  • Demonstrated experience providing technical advice on complex financial matters including policy interpretation, statutory compliance, funding issues, budgeting processes, forecasting techniques, variance analysis, investment appraisal methodologies, taxation matters, procurement processes or contract management.
  • Strong analytical skills enabling you to interpret data trends accurately; prepare detailed forecasts; evaluate business options; develop sound business cases; present complex information clearly; support informed decision-making by management teams or other internal users.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills allowing you to build effective working relationships with senior managers; collaborate with cross-functional teams; engage constructively with external stakeholders such as industry professionals or government agencies.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously while maintaining high standards of quality under tight deadlines within a complex regulatory environment.
