Position Summary
The Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates for civil, paving, streetscape, and landscaping projects. The role involves analysing drawings, specifications, and tender documentation, liaising with suppliers and subcontractors, and providing detailed breakdowns that form the foundation of project bids and budget control.
Key Responsibilities
Tendering & Estimating
- Review and interpret drawings, specifications, and tender documentation for accuracy and scope.
- Prepare detailed quantity take-offs and cost estimates for materials, labour, plant, and subcontractors.
- Analyse tender addenda, RFIs, and project clarifications to ensure pricing compliance.
- Develop trade packages and liaise with subcontractors and suppliers for competitive quotations.
- Compile and submit tender submissions, including methodology, preliminaries, and supporting documentation.
- Perform post-tender negotiations and value engineering assessments.
Cost Management & Reporting
- Maintain and update cost databases, supplier price lists, and labour rates.
- Support project teams in variation pricing.
- Identify cost-saving opportunities and potential risk areas within project scopes.
Coordination & Communication
- Liaise with project managers, engineers, procurement, and site staff to ensure estimates reflect actual construction practices.
- Communicate with clients, consultants, and suppliers professionally and promptly.
- Participate in project handover meetings to transition tendered budgets to construction teams.
Skills & Qualifications
- Minimum 2–5 years of experience in civil construction estimating (preferably in paving, civil works, or landscaping sectors).
- Relevant tertiary qualification in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or Quantity Surveying.
- Strong understanding of Australian construction standards, council specifications, and TfNSW requirements.
- Proficiency in estimating software (e.g., Cubit, Buildsoft, Bluebeam, or Excel-based estimating systems).
- Excellent analytical and numerical skills with high attention to detail.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple tenders with competing deadlines.
Desirable Attributes
- Experience working on public domain, council, or infrastructure projects.
- Knowledge of MW21, AS4901, and NSW Fair Trading contract frameworks.
- Familiarity with supplier and subcontractor pricing in NSW.
- Self-motivated, proactive, and able to work both independently and collaboratively within a team.
