Senior Electrical Officer – Key Summary Location: Remote island-based role

Classification: Level 8 Equivalent

Reports to: Senior Manager – Infrastructure & Engineering

Budget: Approx. $2.5M

Direct Reports: Up to 2 (Electrical Officer & Apprentice)

Primary Purpose Responsible for the reliable, efficient, and compliant operation of a hybrid powerhouse and island-wide electrical distribution network, incorporating renewable and diesel generation systems. Ensures safety, regulatory compliance, and cost efficiency while managing infrastructure in a challenging and resource-limited environment.

Key Accountabilities

  • Operate, maintain, and regulate hybrid power generation (diesel and renewable systems) and high/low voltage electrical distribution.
  • Ensure compliance with electrical, safety, and environmental regulations and standards.
  • Manage and maintain network documentation, safety management systems, and compliance frameworks.
  • Oversee budgeting, maintenance schedules, and project delivery for electrical infrastructure upgrades.
  • Perform system repairs, preventative maintenance, and emergency response to ensure uninterrupted supply.
  • Review development applications and new connection requests impacting the electrical network.
  • Supervise a small technical team, maintaining high safety and performance standards.

Key Challenges

  • Ensuring uninterrupted electricity supply for the entire island community with limited staff and logistical resources.
  • Operating in a remote environment, requiring forward planning, flexibility, and innovation.
  • Being on-call for emergency breakdowns and maintaining supply to critical infrastructure.

Essential Requirements

  • Electrical Trades Certificate (Supervisor's Certificate)
  • Demonstrated high and low voltage operational experience and sound knowledge of electrical supply industry practices.
  • Competency in renewable energy systems, diesel generation, and hybrid power systems.
  • Key High Voltage qualifications:
  • Coordinate and direct switching program
  • Develop HV switching programs
  • Operate local HV switchgear
  • Perform switching to a switching program
  • Perform substation switching operations
  • Current Driver's Licence

Key Knowledge & Experience

  • Proven expertise in power generation, distribution, and renewable energy integration.
  • Strong knowledge of Australian electrical standards, safety, and regulatory frameworks.
  • Experience in maintenance management, budget control, and compliance reporting.
  • Skilled in emergency response and operational decision-making under pressure.
  • Proficient in project management and planning for electrical infrastructure and upgrades.
