Due to continued growth, we're establishing a NATA-accredited laboratory to support our asbestos and occupational hygiene services. We're seeking a motivated and capable Laboratory Technician / Coordinator to lead the setup, accreditation, and day-to-day operation of the new facility in Sydney.

This is a rare opportunity to take ownership of developing a new laboratory, from accreditation and systems implementation through to testing delivery and quality control.

This hands-on role will involve laboratory testing, equipment maintenance, and document control within a developing NATA-accredited (ISO/IEC asbestos laboratory.

Primary activities will include:

  • Building Materials Analysis – identification of asbestos in materials such as fibre cement, insulation, vinyl tiles, and gaskets using Polarised Light Microscopy (PLM) and Dispersion Staining (DS) in accordance with AS 5370:2024 – Sampling and qualitative identification of asbestos in bulk materials.
  • Airborne Asbestos Fibre Counting – conducted in accordance with the Guidance Note on the Membrane Filter Method for Estimating Airborne Asbestos Fibres (2nd Edition) [NOHSC: ].
  • Supporting NATA accreditation and ongoing compliance with quality and technical requirements.
  • Performing quality control testing and maintaining calibration and servicing of laboratory equipment.
  • Managing laboratory inventory, consumables, and reagent stocks.
  • Assisting with document control, policy updates, and procedure development.
  • Liaising with clients and internal project teams regarding analytical results and turnaround times.
  • Maintaining laboratory safety, including air quality checks and non-conformance documentation.
  • Training and mentoring laboratory support staff as the lab grows.

Other skills or experience in occupational hygiene will be viewed favourably.

What You'll Bring

  • Qualifications in science, chemistry, or a related field.
  • Experience in asbestos identification (PLM/DS) and/or fibre counting (PCM).
  • Understanding of NATA and ISO/IEC 17025 systems and accreditation processes.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
  • Excellent time management, organisational, and communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and laboratory record systems.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a growing team.
