Social workers in Services Australia (the agency) provide professional assessments, crisis intervention, short term counselling, information and referrals. Services are prioritised to people presenting at risk of suicide or self-harm, people affected by family and domestic violence, young people without adequate support and people impacted by disasters and emergencies.

Social workers are located nationally in face-to face and telephony channels to ensure a social work service is accessible for all people in Australia, regardless of geographical location. With meaningful work undertaken across all parts of our country, you will be part of an extensive network of like-minded social workers and valued for who you are and what you can bring to our agency. The work is often challenging but is also rewarding and will suit candidates who are resilient, can work in a fast-paced environment, and embrace innovation and change.

Social workers also work with service officers, community groups and allied health service providers to deliver services to customers facing significant disadvantage, or multiple and complex challenges, who require coordinated assistance. You will be helping a diverse range of customers at key moments in their lives by listening, advocating and connecting them to payments and services.

The APS5 role is an entry-level and/or developmental role in the agency's social work stream. Social workers operate under a greater degree of professional supervision and do not possess any service delivery delegations. Social workers undertake their role under the support and general direction of the EL1 Social Worker Support Manager.

Social workers in the agency have the opportunity to participate in professional practice groups such as the National Indigenous Social Work Group, the LGBTIQ+ Community of Practice and a Youth Council dedicated to early career social workers under the age of 30.

Please note that 'Broadbanding' to a social worker APS6 level is available after a qualifying period and once identified competencies can be demonstrated.

Our ideal candidate will show their work-related capability/experience undertaking relevant duties. These capabilities are aligned to the ASP5 Capability Framework.
