Employment Type: Permanent Full Time
Salary range: As per the Senior Staff Specialist Award, with Level 3 Management Allowance
Location: NSW Ambulance, State Operations Centre, Sydney Olympic Park
Applications Close: 11.59 PM, 24 September 2025
Rare opportunity to lead and shape the future direction of one of the world's most respected aeromedical services.
NSW Ambulance is one of the largest and most modern ambulance services in the world and stands at the forefront of emergency medical care. It is a division of NSW Health and provides emergency and non-emergency clinical care, retrieval, and specialist patient transport services to a population of over 8 million, delivered by its 8,000 staff through 250 locations across metropolitan and regional NSW.
Aeromedical Operations is a core service delivery directorate of NSW Ambulance and provides specialist coordination, response, treatment and multi-modal transport for pre-hospital incidents, medical retrievals, long distance medical transports, search and rescues and major incidents. We utilise both fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft with a statewide fleet of 13 helicopters, 7 fixed wing aircraft and 8 road retrieval ambulances and transport 12,000 patients per year. We are recognised as a beacon of thought leadership in the sector.
Due to retirement, there is now the need to appoint an exceptional Director Aeromedical Clinical Operations to further elevate the delivery of world class healthcare and retrieval services. In this high profile, strategic role reporting to the Executive Director Aeromedical & Special Operations, you will:
- Lead the clinical workforce within Aeromedical Operations including the Aeromedical Control Centre and aeromedical bases, ensuring the delivery of contemporary, safe and evidence based critical care for prehospital and inter-hospital medical retrieval responses across NSW and the ACT.
- Provide expert clinical advice to the Executive Director Aeromedical & Special Operations, Executive Director Clinical Capability, Safety and Quality, and Executive Director Medical Services.
- Provide leadership in the development of prehospital and retrieval medicine, clinical policy objectives and care pathways, and support the development of systems and processes to achieve the clinical goals of NSW Ambulance and NSW Health.
- Ensure the medical workforce within Aeromedical Operations meets operational demands, is clinically effective, safe, credentialed and supported.
- Work collaboratively with clinical staff to ensure rigorous review of patient outcomes with effective uptake of safety initiatives and ensure key quality and safety performance measures are achieved.
- Participate in clinical rosters as a State Retrieval Consultant and Prehospital & Retrieval Specialist, and in a shared senior on-call roster.
- Develop and implement innovative, evidence based and contemporary work practices which drive the delivery of world class aeromedical, retrieval and emergency management services.
- Forge strong relationships across NSW Ambulance as well as with diverse stakeholders including statewide, national, and international emergency services, NSW Ministry of Health, local health districts and other associated agencies.
The ideal applicant will demonstrate the following criteria
- Accomplished medical leader with experience managing complex clinical operations in pre-hospital and retrieval medicine (PHRM) and critical care settings.
- Medical qualifications registrable with AHPRA.
- Additional qualifications in Intensive Care, Emergency Medicine, or Anaesthesia.
- Meets eligibility for appointment as a Senior Staff Specialist under the Staff Specialist (State) Award.
- Demonstrated strategic management skills with the ability to lead innovative strategies and workforce improvements.
- Exceptional leadership, communication, and engagement capabilities.
- Strong ability to influence and collaborate with diverse stakeholders.
This represents a rare opportunity to redefine aeromedical excellence. In this pivotal role, you'll drive clinical innovation and operational excellence, ensuring world-class healthcare reaches every corner of NSW – from bustling cities to remote communities where we're often the critical link between life and death.
NSW Ambulance is committed to creating a diverse and inclusive environment which reflects the community we serve. We encourage candidates from all backgrounds, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, LGBTIQA+, neurodiverse individuals, and people with disabilities to apply.
