Who are we?
The National Security & Space Program sits within the Bureau's Business Solutions Group and is the primary provider of environmental intelligence to national security agencies, specifically the Australian Defence Force (ADF). Services provided by this Program enhance Australia's national security agenda through the provision of accurate, timely and relevant environmental intelligence, including space weather, meteorological, oceanographic services, and climate data.
Services to Defence and the ADF specifically include the provision of forecasts, real-time observations, climatological data, and oceanographic data and services, meteorological training, professional advice to assist decision-making and planning, and direct support to operations and activities.

The position reports to the Manager Defence Operations – HQ Joint Operations Command and assists in the operational service delivery of the Meteorological Intelligence Support Team (MIST) in support of the ADF operations management at Joint Operations Command (JOC).
The MIST operates from the Australian Defence Force (ADF) Headquarters Joint Operations Command (HQJOC) near Bungendore, NSW. This position operates as part of 24/7 shift activity and acts as the central point of contact for the ADF by providing meteorological support to Defence operations and exercises. Presence on site at HQJOC is essential and will be required to build partnerships and communicate effectively with the ADF senior intelligence and planning officer community, and the ADF meteorological community. The MIST also acts as the Incident Management Hub for meteorological operations nationwide and provides a central point of contact for Defence Weather Services (DWS) operations. The role may develop to support other National Security agencies.

The position is part project work combined with operational shift work including night shifts, day shift and weekend rostering as part of a structured roster. The project work provides support to the MIST by responding to Defence requests and through assisting the MDO-HQJOC. As a senior meteorologist, the operational role supervises products and services produced by junior meteorologists, and in the absence of junior meteorologists, provides weather watch for Australia and other areas of ADF operations worldwide, provides guidance to senior ADF personnel on meteorological and BoM specialised products and services for security and intelligence briefings. The position also ensures the efficient production of meteorological forecasts in support of Defence operations and exercises.

The Senior Defence Meteorologist acts in accordance with Bureau and Defence governance frameworks and prescribed National Security Program plans, policies and procedures.
The occupant is required to liaise internally to manage incidents that arise in the course of Defence Weather Service operations as per the Bureau's HS&E policies and procedures. This position is Canberra/Bungendore based and remote options would be challenging to support due to the need to be embedded in a customer location.
