Primary objective

Provide high quality legal advice relating to the prosecution of summary matters in the Local Court of the Northern Territory.

Provide representation for the prosecution before all courts of the Northern Territory and the High Court of Australia in less

complex prosecutions, appeals and related matters. This is a litigation position for an experienced advocate.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Conduct and appear in complex criminal proceedings including bail and arrest, Local Court, contest mentions, youth

prosecutions, summary hearings, preliminary examinations, instructing in trials, pleas, bail hearings, appeals and related

proceedings in accordance with the Directors' Guidelines.

  1. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing and prepare and present evidence, positions or factual analyses clearly and

correctly.

  1. Provide quality legal advice on allocated prosecution cases.
  2. Evaluate, screen and prepare briefs of evidence and recommend charges in accordance with the Directors' Guidelines.
  3. Appropriately consult, liaise, inform and negotiate as required with defence counsel, victims, the police officer-in-charge, court

staff and the Witness Assistance Service.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. Admitted or eligible for admission as a barrister or solicitor of the High Court or of a Supreme Court of a State or Territory of

Australia.

  1. Demonstrated experience and knowledge in criminal law and advocacy with the ability to provide high quality legal advice and

demonstrated experience in running hearings in the lower jurisdictions.

  1. Demonstrated knowledge of the DPP Guidelines, the Criminal Code (NT) and Uniform Evidence Law, and the procedures of

the courts of the Northern Territory or demonstrated ability in another jurisdiction and ability to quickly attain relevant local

knowledge.

  1. Excellent organisational skills with the ability to work under pressure, make sound judgements and prioritise workloads in a

busy environment.

  1. Proven ability to work independently and with little supervision.

  2. Good oral and written communication and negotiation skills with demonstrated ability to effectively engage, negotiate and

collaborate with other agencies, defence agencies, Courts, local communities, other external stakeholders and the general

public.

  1. An ability to interact effectively with people from a variety of cultural and socio- economic backgrounds.

  2. Preparedness to undertake intrastate travel and eligible to hold a Driver's Licence.

  3. Hold (or have the capacity to obtain) a current Working with Children Clearance (Ochre Card).
