Primary objective

Provide leadership and management to a team of summary prosecutors undertaking prosecutions before the Local Court

and Youth Justice Court within the northern region. Provide specialist legal advice on more complex summary prosecution

cases. Develop and manage the inter-relationship between the Summary Prosecutions and Crown Prosecutions units.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Provide leadership and direct supervision to a team of summary prosecutors undertaking prosecutions before the Local

Court and Youth Justice Court within the northern region.

  1. Coordinate a smaller team of summary prosecutors, including creating and monitoring the monthly roster of staff.
  2. Provide specialist legal advice on more complex summary prosecution cases.
  3. Provide guidance, professional advice and support to Summary Prosecutions staff with feedback to prosecutors in

relation to performance issues and professional development needs, including undertaking formal performance reviews

and performance management where appropriate.

  1. Develop and implement strategies for the effective recruitment, development and retention of junior prosecutors to

support current and future needs of the Office.

  1. Conduct proceedings in the Supreme Court as required.

  2. Carriage and conduct of contested summary prosecutions, pleas, bail hearings and preliminary examinations, contest

mentions, Local Court appeals and related proceedings in accordance with the Director's Guidelines.

8. Provide professional advice, guidance and support to NT Police.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. Admitted or eligible for admission as a barrister or solicitor of the High Court or of a Supreme Court of a State or

Territory of Australia.

2. A high level of advocacy, communication (written and oral) and negotiation skills.

  1. Demonstrated significant experience in criminal law and advocacy with the ability to provide specialist legal advice.
  2. Significant complex criminal hearing experience and good knowledge of Uniform Evidence Law.
  3. Demonstrated experience in providing leadership in the delivery of professional high quality services and working

collaboratively with a range of internal and external stakeholders to achieve outcomes.

6. Knowledge of the DPP Prosecution Policy and Guidelines and the ability to prosecute in accordance with the same.

7. Proven ability to interact effectively with people from diverse cultures and work in a high-pressure environment.

8. Preparedness to undertake regular interstate travel for bush court and an ability to obtain a Driver's licence.

9. Some demonstrated experience in the management in the context of a busy practice.

Desirable

1. Sound understanding of Indigenous issues relevant to prosecution services.
