We are seeking a highly motivated, energetic and proactive lawyer to work as part of our dynamic team. We are looking for someone with strong legal experience who is ready to hit the ground running.

In your work you will help advise Queensland Corrective Services (QCS) in relation to employment and workplace law matters.

No two days are the same as a Principal Legal Officer at QCS. Your duties will be varied and include mentoring junior staff and providing high level advice to executive staff on a variety of matters.

In this role you will:

  • Provide authoritative legal advice (both written and oral) ,primarily in relation to disciplinary matters involving QCS staff and processes, recommended outcomes and decisions and in relation to emerging or current case law, legislative governance and risk mitigation and in relation to departmental activities and contentious issues, often of a complex and sensitive nature and which may be the subject of litigation, which are under consideration by the Minister, Commissioner, Executive Team and other senior QCS officers.
  • Prepare timely advice, reports, correspondence and briefing notes on legal issues including statutory interpretation in relation to QCS activities and the law reform initiatives of external agencies.
  • Liaise with Crown Law and other legal service providers to ensure a consistent, coordinated and effective approach to the provision of legal services involving QCS.
  • Undertake legal research, analysis, review and evaluation to ensure QCS' activities, including its operations and procedures, satisfy public sector standards for accountability and effectiveness.
  • Provide management support including directly supervising and mentoring other legal officers, managing the appropriate allocation of work to the team and monitoring timeframes in the delivery of legal services.
  • Assist to market Legal Strategy and Services' capability and services and contribute to the strengthening of capabilities of QCS staff in legal issues. You may also be required to provide training to QCS staff in relation to the investigating and decision-making processes.
  • Assist the Director to identify and make recommendations to the Executive Team and other senior management on trends, risks and future opportunities in contemporary and emerging legal issues affecting QCS
